Stalling on LPG
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on this stalling issue. It only happens on LPG and not on petrol. The car is a s60 Bifuel MY04 LPG, it's done 84000m and has been regularly serviced. Basically what it started with was the car stalling on the overrun when I dipped the clutch on gas. So I would be approaching a junction and as I accelerated to make the turn the car there would be nothing as the engine would have stalled as I changed down. When I stopped, took the key out and then restarted the problem disappeared. It would come and go and its appearance was not predictable but it usually happened at least 45 mins into a journey. Recenty the car has 'died' twice under full or part throttle, which it has never done before. Any ideas?? Thanks for all your time and help! H |

Mate of mine had this problem with his, he replaced the fuel distributor, he replaced individual bits of it, but it must be the main body that went faulty.

Sorry, just to be clear, and his replacing the distributor, or bits of it, cured the issue?
Thanks, it's what the dealer had recommended but I couldnt get my head around the fact that it was cured by cycling the ignition, Ihad it in my mind that it was a software or electronic issue. |

as Andy said, I had trouble over a long period of time, mainly to be honest at the start i hadnt a clue how it really worked.
The problem you are having is the exact same as i was having (cutting off on gas, turn car off/on and it will run on gas for another bit) I can nearly guarantee that it the distributor at fault, check ebay for replacement as the part from volvo is a fortune. People mentioned about it being the sensors on the distributor, i also tried these, in the end a pal of ours gave me a distributor, all be it, his was making my car off a cylinder, after removing and cleaning it the best i could, was still off a cylinder,so as you may know your 5 cylinder car, its gas distributor has 6 exits, so i just swapped one of the pipes over and jobsagooden so far........... out of curiosity, when your car was running fine, how many miles did you get from a tank of gas ? |

Hi
One thing that may be worth checking is the gas pressures which is adjustable on the governor. If you look on the top there's a 5mm Allen key and tough to get at when hot but there's another on the under side to adj the high and low pressures. If these are to spec the fault will prob end up being the governor itself as the distributor only supplies gas to each cylinder if these fault you normally get a misfire on gas not cutting out. The governor supplies the gas to the distributor and the fault prob lies in the lack of gas supplied to distributor hope this helps ..... |

but then again, maybe a pressure problem could cause high fuel consumption ? |

The distributor is the most common problem with the Bifuels, have a search through the forum and you will find it has come up quite often.

Thanks Everyone, I really appreciate your help. I get about 230 mile to a tank of gas but only on long motorway runs, as soon as I drive regular short journeys about town the mileage plummets. I reckon it's because the gas system depressurises into the atmosphere everytime you switch off and then repressurises when you start up again - on long journeys this cycle doesn't happen as often. Could be rubbish but how come when you leave the car for a while all the gas pipes go soft?
This brings me onto my next question, previously I did have a misfiring issue that was solved by the garage cleaning out the throttle body but I did try the 'injector cleaning fluid down the gas line into the distributor' trick in case that was the problem at the time (which it wasn't). Is this worth trying before I ask the garage to clean out the distributor, and is it worth asking them to service the distributor or should I just get it changed? It's not happening every journey by any means and I do 100 miles a day - how often was it happening to you Bawheid before you got around to doing something about it? |

it stalled at totally random times, but i would ever have got 45 mins into a journey, heaven forbid if i ever had to drive for 45 minutes anyway lol
but any time it did stall, if i turned off/on the ignition, away it would go on gas again mileage wise, i only get between 160 - 180 miles per tank of gas (£30), dont start me on petrol consumption lol |
