new car
Hi ive just become proud owner of a s40 .
Its an R reg and needs work doing before i can use it though . I previously owned a rover 25 and sold due to never ending head gasket problems and realy needed money. Anyways my dad did a bit of buying and selling cars and took the s40 in part ex over a year ago and it became apparent that ther was problems when the car was in higher gears. He bought a low mileaged gearbox for it but thats as far as it ever got. I was owed some wages from spending a week working for him and with money being tight he suggested scrapping the car and gearbox and me having the money but as i am currently car-less and having heard a volvo is a good car to have i decided to become the new owner instead. I believe it is a good spec with leather interior and alloys and cant wait to get it on the road. It had 9 months MOT when bought so despite the gearbox prob i believe it to be in good condition. Im sorry this is my first post and if i have bored anyone i promise there will be more to come, especially having scanned over the forum and seeing the great help you guys give and hopefully be able to help aswel or at least give opinions . I was just wondering if there are any how to guides on a gearbox swap or if anyone can give me advice / point me in the right direction. Thanks Michael |

Hi, i just checked log book and found out it is a S40 T4 1855cc. Im not sure what this means though?
Any ideas on help with the gearbox swap, would a haynes manual have a step by step guide? Are there any online pdf's anyone knows of. Thanks again |

It means it should go like the wind once you've fixed it. It's the original high-pressure turbo T4 model. Advertised 0-60 in just over 7 seconds I think.
Haynes does indeed have a step-by-step on gearbox removal and replacement but since I've never done anything of the kind I can't tell you how accurate or useful it is. Someone here will surely have some know-how in due course, though I have to say I haven't seen any detailed description of the procedure in the 8 months or so that I've been on this forum.

Thanks for quick reply, i guess i need to source a haynes and get to work then .
With it being a high pressure turbo is the mpg quite low and expensive to run, im hoping there isnt much wrong because sounds like it could be quite expensive. Does anyone else own this car that can give me advice or tips, like is ther anything i need to look out for or check regularly. i just want to make sure as the biggest sized engine i have driven before is a 1.6. |

Loads of people on here own them - but not me, so I'll leave tips on typical problems to them. Insurance can be punishing depending on age and personal driving history. Fuel economy relatively poor in town but I think you can get respectable mpg (mid-30s?) in motorway driving, which is what they're designed for. I gather that the performance makes it tempting to drive in a less economical manner than you might, but this might be a reasonable price to pay for the fun to be had... Others will know far more than I do.

Welcome, good luck & do keep us up to date with how you get on please.
As mentioned previously, once sorted it should 'fly'.

I have hjust been to halfords and bought a manual and will prob start and hopefully complete the swap over this coming weekend.
I have just charged the battery up and have seen the mileage is a respectable 77k . It isnt just the gearbox that is in the car it is also lights, spare engine parts e.t.c and ther is a pallet with cloth interior somewhere. I found out my dad didnt just buy a gearbox he bought a non-runner and took the gearbox and everything else out before it was scrapped. Just thought id inform incase anyone is in need of any spares. Ill have a proper look when i empty the car and sort whats what. Thanks again and i cant wait to fly |

hello mate, you've just become the proud owner of a 200 bhp motor, as standard. they are a true wolf in sheep's clothing you wont be disappointed with it's performance.petrol wise you should see around 25mpg round town and i can get the computer telling me i'm doing about 40mpg at about 70 mph that i would say was achievable easy, it's just when you put your foot down, it drinks the stuff faster than an alcoholic at a free bar. i have slightly fettled mine and it's scary to watch the needle drop nearly as fast as the rev counter go's up.

Theres quite a few different gearboxes in the varying forms of S40's that were made, I do hope your father sourced the correct one or I fear it might not last too long and you will have to do a swap all over again.
