Default Engine whirring after running for a mile

We've had our S40 (53 reg) for about 18 months and it's started making an intermittent whirring type sound about 5-10 minutes after starting up and continues throughout the day. It seems to be getting louder but our usual mechanic hasn't found the cause of the fault.

I wonder if anyone here has had a similar problem and could point us in the right direction to get it fixed. Apart from that it runs fine and is the best car we've ever had.

Thanks

Hmmm mines a 2001 Y reg, done 65k and.... I live in Bolton! Lol

Fancy meeting and comparing noises?

Mine seems to become apparent after a good 10/15 mins and I can only hear it on idle with a window down or door open

Could be your vvt pulley my 52 plate v40 was the same till i had it done. If you use the search on the site and search for vvt pulley there is one of the post with a vidio/audio clip of what it sounds like. Have a listen and if yours sounds the same thats what it is i had my cam/aux belt replaced with mine as there have to be remove to do the job is the noise 2 seconds obn two seconds off.
