Default V40 2.0T Idling issue

Hi,

Just been tinkering with my bus, trying to sort out an idling issue.

Car runs OK when driving along, but when idling, sometimes the revs drop until the engine nearly stalls. Other times it'll jump up to about 1300rpm without pushing the accelerator. Seems worse if you rev the engine slightly while the car is not moving, then release the accelerator.

Tried cleaning the MAF wire with electronic solvent cleaner spray, installing a new air filter as the old one was crushed and distorted (?), and cleaning the plugs which were blackened.

Any ideas please?

Idle control valve at the front of the engine under the plastic cover. Two torx bolts to remove (plus wiring connector) and spray with carb cleaner or similar. Clean it out with a rag and put back. You'll most likely get a load of black gunk out of it....! It's under the blue cover at the front of the pic below (your's will be black unless it's painted!)
