Default List of 'problems'

Well, not really problems, just minor niggles that I have with my L Reg Volvo 440 1.8si that I have now had for about a month.

It came with 12 months MOT, but with an advisory that front brake pads are wearing thin. I've got a haynes manual, so know in theory what to do. Looks quite straightforward to me, so may replace the pads and discs as wel while I'm at it. Any good place to buy parts from that are good value other than the usual Euro car parts or GSF?

I've replacedthe bulbs behind the dash,as it was completely non-illuminates, replaced the hyraulic arms on the boot lid which didn't work, and not much else. In the previous 3 years it has done no more than 6k miles!!

A few issues with it though which I could do with some help on:

-Constant ticking/clicking noise from the rev counter. I'm pretty sure that is where it comes from, and is slightly annoying. Is a ticking rev gauge a common feature, or can it be fixed easially?

-Central locking. Should the boot be operated by the central locking (key, not remote). Currently unlicking with the key in the drivers door only opens the doors, not the boot. Is there a way to get the boot linked to the central locking?

-Noisy power steering at low speeds. Power steering level is fine, but really noisy when steering at slow speeds, i.e parking. Is this normal, or should I be concerned about it?

-Starting/Idle. Sometimes it will start, rev, then stall, all in a bout 3 seconds. other times it won't start (very occasionally) with a sort of gringing noise. Sometimes it idles really erratically. What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

On my '97 440 the remote central locking does lock and unlock the boot.

BUT.

The button has a keyhole which if you rotate with the key in I think its anti-clockwise it will lock the boot and disable the interaction with the central locking.

"Unlock" the boot with the key (So when you press the boot button the boot opens) and then the boot should be locked when you lock the car with remote

My power steering also made noises at low speed. was in need for new power steering fluid. If you look in the container when it's empty you can see a small filter on top of the exit tube. This was blocked with dirt. Removed it carefully with a cloth. Everything is fine now. Use ATF type G. Here is a link with pics how to drain and flush the fluid.

As for the power steering. Have you done any work lately, like replacing the water pump? After I did my 240s W/P the P/steering made a whining noise on tick over. I had'nt got the belt 'well alligned' thats all. Check your belt is running 'true', may be just a simple as that.....

hi, I recently bought a 440 Si on an L plate, and the central locking works on the boot, but not if you've locked the boot on it's own. Leave boot unlocked, then try locking through drivers door. Should work then.
