Default Starting issue

Hi all,

I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time.

I sold my 2004 S80 earlier this year to get a 2008 V70 in preparation of the arrival of our first baby.

The v70 in question is a 163 bhp D5 Auto se lux.

Recently the car has encountered some starting issues.

The first intermittent problem is that sometimes when the key is inserted, the dash won't light up, no pre starting warning lights, and nothing happening when the start button is pressed. The steering lock can be heard releasing. After a few attempts the dash lights up and normal service resumes. Using the spare key and changing the fob battery makes no deference.

The second problem, which may be related is that, on starting the car starts but doesn't run properly for approx 5 seconds, as if the starter is not disengaging. There is no untoward noise or screech like you get if you try and blip the starter of a running car. The revs are low, the then the blip passes and it runs as normal. Fuel filter recently changed also.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Robert

My starting point would be testing the main car battery.

I'll check it out, but it's a genuine volvo battery that I bought for the S80 a year ago and kept for the V70. So hopefully it's ok.

Are the additional electronics in lieu of a traditional key a weakness in these cars?

Hi all,

The battery is fine.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

This morning it took loads of messing about taking key in and out of the slot a few times before all the pre starting warning lights came on and the stater brings to spin and the car starts.

2 things I found since I bought mine, first is sometimes the brake pedal and clutch need pressing but the second and more common is that I need to firmly depress the clutch to the bottom of its travel before Xmas light time & it'll start - all of 1cm about. It won't light up without clutch being pressed.

Obviously, mine is a manual & I don't know procedure on autos - foot on brake?

Can't help with the other issue

It's similar to the manuals, foot on brake before it starts.

Oh my auto S80, it's press brake pedal and hit the starter button, it usually immediately starts the car.
Sometimes, the ignition just comes on/dash lights up and I have to hit start again, but I put that down to my hand being quicker than my foot!

Regardless of the foot on the brake pedal, the steering lock always disengages and the dash lights up...

The only other odd one out, is sometimes it says 'engine oil level, wait...' then starts, but OP should be seeing that message.

On my 2012 XC70 I find that sometimes pressing the brake pedal once is not enough to allow the starter to operate. It feels as if the threshold is registered by the ECU through pressure in the braking system rather than a simple mechanical switch. A second press of the pedal meeting more resistance in the system always allows the start to commence. Can anyone say what sort of sensor is monitoring the pressing of the brake pedal?

Hi,

Have you checked the batteries in the key?
