Is that just to repair the one valve or recondition the whole head? Seems cheap for the second option which is what should be done as you wouldn't want it to be fixed and another one to go soon after.

Best to clarify what he's doing. For the sake of a couple of hundred more, you may end up with something much more reliable as most of the labour will be removing and reinstalling the head

I shouldn't think the head would need any work, other than a pressure check, maybe a valve seat recut and a new valve. Why would you recondition the head ?

Because it's off the car which is a big chunk of labour so it's worthwhile unless the mileage is low and it's an unlucky valve failure. However it'd still be worthwhile lapping all the valves to get the best seal possible.

Whenever a cylinder head is removed it must be sent away to be skimmed (to make it completely flat) and fitted with a new head gasket and new head bolts. All the valves should be treated whilst the head is on the bench.

To be fair though I'd be amazed if it has got a 'burnt out' valve, that's unheard of on diesels really. Has it had petrol through it by mistake?

Has the burnt out valve been confirmed by a compression test? i.e. that cylinder will be low on compression.

It would seem to me that if you're having trouble with one cylinder then this could point to an injector fault.

Be careful before you go ahead with expensive works.

The valve may not have burnt out, but the valve rocker arm may have snapped>

This was taken off a 2006 2.0D .. symptoms: low compression in one of the cylinders along with a distinct ticking noise, again very rare but it does happen.

So as mentioned, before putting the car through major surgery have the no.3 injector tested first.
