After fitting my TPMS kit last month I noticed a slight vibration on the car, so I ordered some stick-on counter balance weights and put them opposite the valves/sensors to iron out the weight difference. The sun was out, no wind, not too cold so washed the car and inspected my holed rear box which I have temporarily fixed with some Gun Gum to keep the noise down.

Most scared I've ever been in a car
Over the years, I've had tyre failures, steering failures, brake failures, suspension failures, all sorts and everysort in mine and other people's cars, but today I reached a new low.
This morning, I had cause to drive a brand new XC90 T8 Hybrid. I got about 1/4 mile through really tiny back lanes and villages and couldn't quite understand why Volvo would make a car that feels like a '70 Range Rover with a 300kg church bell mounted on a 8m scaffold on the roof whilst only doing 6mph. Got onto the A46 and this thing desperately tried to kill me. First of all, it would bounce at the front gently whilst swaying side to side, and then develop its own tank slapper, like a small row boat on a stormy sea. Then with zero steering input and less warning, it would suddenly leap into the adjacent lane, in this case, toward an oncoming truck. There was no warning light, no message, just what feels like random ride heights at each corner and a random dose of rear steer at any speed between 20 and 50. I never got any faster than that, else I wouldn't be typing this. The suspension settings were utter gibberish ("Hybrid", "Pure Drive", "Dynamic":- what on earth do any of those marketing puff crappy words mean?), and regardless, none of them made the slightest difference. For £65k odd car with 1055 miles on the clock, this was desperate. I'm content to accept things will fail, but when they do, they need to do so in a safe or at least predictable manner. Not a happy Petey. |

Unlucky, that, Petey.. or maybe one lucky escape?
to stick to topic: changed that rim, fitted new air filter, ordered spark plugs, oil filter and oil, had a look at suspension prices. also had a look at 2 XC70 P2, one with 130k for 5 grand, other with 105k for 3 grand. both wrecks.. oil leak from gearbox- botched up job, fied up aircon clutches, worn steerings.. why do i think of changing car again? in comparison my 260k miles V70 works like brand new!

It was sort of off-topic, but I’d been recently thinking of replacing the ‘05 V70 D5, but I know absolutely no matter what it does to me, it won’t ever do what that brand new Volvo did.
(ISO 26262 focuses on functional safety and how electronic systems should include sufficient redundancy to ensure faults are detected and subsequently fail safe. It’s not yet law anywhere although China looks to be the first to adopt it, but you’d have thought Volvo would be the vanguard by leading it in Europe; I have first hand experience that they’re not!) Much more on-topic, I started looked at Grom installations for my ‘05. How do they connect to the HU850? |

Yesterday: new spark plugs.
Today: Quick wash, nothing special, I'm going to get dirty in a day or two anyway, New engine oil and filter Sump dump, yet another one, on gearbox.. Time to a few miles run (A3) to see if I feel any difference..

Yesterday purchased an S80 T6 without knowing what it was.
Today had fun insuring it, taxing it and generally getting used to how this awesome machine drives. |
