Smile Are wheel nuts the same for steel wheels and alloy wheels?

Hi I have a 2002 Volvo s60 D5 running 16" Mimus alloys and I've just bought some second hand genuine Volvo 16" steel wheels off eBay. They are the same width and ET as the Mimus alloys. The only concern I have is will the wheel nuts for the alloys be the same as the steel wheels?

My thinking is they will be alright as the spare wheel is a steelie space saver I just need some reassurance from someone in the know.

According to my manual you use the same bolts for the steel space saver as you say so you should be fine. To be sure I would fit one on the front and rear axle and make sure the wheel rotates freely.

My previous car was a Merc E320 CDi and the tool kit included a set of bolts for the steel space saver. They were shorter than the bolts for the alloys.

I suspect that on the Merc the alloy bolts were too long if fitted with the space saver and may have protruded too far into the hub and damaged the brake mechanism.

Thanks hopefully saves me having to by wheel bolts if the seats are the same. I will check how much thread sticks out of the alloy with the bolt inserted and then measure how much it sticks out on the steelie and hopefully I wont need longer or shorter bolts.

Morning R,You may have to run a tap through to clear any rust /gunge that may be in the threads as the steels rims are thinner than the alloys.

Regards,Keith.

Back in the day (early 2,000s) Volvo didn't make chrome plated wheel bolts for alloys, you just used the same steel bolts that were used with steel wheels. I can't remember when chrome bolts came in, I do remember buying a set

Default I beg to differ.....

I too have Mimas alloys and use the very same bolts to secure my winter steel wheels. There is a taper on the steel wheels that accommodates the bolts, I have done this for 4 or 5 winters now with no ill effects. The bolts will protrude through the hub further than it would with an alloy but the bolt thread does this anyway I believe.
HTH?

The wheel bolts fitted no problem and the length was not an issue as the thread stuck out the same amount as the alloy.
