V70 Dual mass flywheel
Afternoon all,
does anyone have experience with worn/out of balance dual mass flywheels? Car shudders when pulling away in 1st, at speeds above 40 the whole car vibrates, you can feel it through the floor, seats pedals, steering, the lot! I thought it was perhaps a wheel out of balance or suspension issue but I have just fitted new wheels/tyres, all balanced, tracking done, suspension bits replaced if worn, brakes checked, car runs weel and handles well but vibration is really annoying! It's done 235k!!! Thanks, for help! |

Is this car new to you and has this happened out of the blue.
Typical DMF failure is a bell housing rattle at cold idle getting a bit worse at the clutch bite point. Many have reported them soldiering on for quite a while. What you describe sounds a bit extreme. |

I’ve been in two vehicles where the DMF failed and on both occasions it wasn’t a subtle thing.
In much the same way you’d notice if a leg fell off, when the flywheel fails neighbours in another postcode might get an inkling. |

Yep, when the DMF failed in my Alfa diesel it drove fine apart from the very loud rattle noise at low rpm. No vibration at all.

Your symptoms could also describe a knackered inner cv joint.

There is sometimes a rattle on start up but passes as soon as car is idling. I have owned it for 3 years and it has always juddered in 1st at pull away. The vibration has grown steadily over the last 4 months but I was putting it down to wheels/suspension. Now all that has been fixed and it's still there. Possibly even more noticeable as everything else is tight! |

I'd still check that the inner CVs can move in and out, a locked one will cause exactly your symptoms as the engine moves. It may not have any lateral play.

Engine mounts are all good and recently replaced, drive shaft is ok too.
Vibration becomes noticeable at 50+ although you can still feel it a little when going slower.... |
