Cleaned the 'soft feel' gunk off the dash switches today. I did the door switches sometime ago and they are so much better - look and feel clean.
Surprised at how easy the switches pop out the dash and the switch cover comes off. Just got the air con and radio knobs to do when I have a spare moment.

Replaced the front ABS reluctor rings on my 1998 V70 Tdi Auto.
A job that turned out to be both easier and harder than I thought it would be. It was highlighted about 18 months ago that one of them had split although it was not mentioned on the MOT. After deliberating for about 18 months, I finally plucked up the courage to have a go at doing them myself having read horror stories of the dreaded metal adhesive used to glue the driveshaft into the hub. However the CV boots were replaced about 10 years ago so I was hoping that the local Volvo dealer had already freed them off as turned out to be the case. That was one of the easy parts. On loosening the driveshaft nuts the shafts came out of the hub with little more than finger pressure. According to Mr Haynes, you can release the ball joint on the lower control arm and this should create enough clearance to free the driveshaft. This proved a non starter so I ended up disconnecting the track rods from the steering knuckle, which was straightforward and then removing the bolts securing the steering knuckle to the strut. This was not straightforward due to corrosion and involved heat, penetrating oil and some rather serious abuse of my Metrinch wall drive spanners. New nuts and bolts have been ordered. The driveshafts were then free but I left then in situ and since both ABS rings had split, removing them was no problem. After cleaning up the surface on the CV joint, the new rings were easily tapped into place. Putting the whole lot back together was a lot easier than taking it apart. Having seen the state of the old reluctor rings, I'm amazed it worked at all but it never gave any indication of trouble. I shan't test it until I've got the new bolts in and by having to disturb them I've probably buggered up the wheel alignment. So I shall be getting that done pronto too. I'll post a few photographs should anybody be interested. I'd now feel confident tackling CV boot replacement (they were fine by the way) and replacing the struts and springs if necessary. A long but satisfying day. I take my hat off to the gentleman who managed to do this in a couple of hours; it took me all day! I fitted all the cruise control bits to my 850 a couple of weeks ago but it didn't work. Yesterday I investigated and found that there were two reasons for this, both related to the donor car being an automatic S70 and not a manual 850.
The pull rod (25,25,26) was telescopic, not the hinged arrangement you see here. Even with the bellows fully retracted it didn't start to pull the pedal. It needs to be telescopic or hinged so you can operate the accelerator without compressing the bellows, so my initial thought of gluing it to a fixed length wouldn't have worked. When I fitted the parts I was pleasantly surprised to find that the brackets (27 and 29) were already in place. I should have looked closer, they are quite different. With the S70 brackets in place the pull rod was able to work properly and I took it out for another test drive. It still didn't work, which brings me to the other difference. With the donor being an automatic it didn't have a clutch valve. The brake and clutch valves (12 and 15, they are identical) work in two ways. When the plunger is released it opens a valve that lets air in to discharge the vacuum pressure, and it also opens a switch to cancel the cruise. Once I'd thought about it I realised all I had to do was bridge the contacts on the clutch valve plug. That got the cruise control working, so all I have to do now is buy another brake/cluch valve and some vacuum connections and it'll be a proper job. With the exception of grubbing around under the steering column, which is never fun, it was all surprisingly easy to do. All the electrical connections and mounting points are already there.
