Cool I don't believe it!

For the past several weeks I have been plagued with an intermittently flashing dashboard display telling me: ANTI SKID SERVICE REQUIRED - PARK ASSIST SERVICE REQUIRED - BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY and IMMOBILISER SEE DRIVER MANUAL. After 5-10 minutes I could turn on the ignition and drive on. I have hooked up diagnostics 3 times, once it flashed up brake switch fault, could find nothing wrong and 25 miles later the warning sequence started again. Back onto diagnostics which flashed up accelerator fault. Cleaned the connection plug as recommended and 15 miles later I am immobilised again. Back on the machine to find ABS fault, Check all connectors, including battery terminals and earths only to find myself stuck on the side of the road again within a very short time. Having lost faith in the diagnostics I continued to make short journeys for a week or so, suffering a period of immobility on almost every outing. On the last occasion whilst poking about under the bonnet I noticed that the brake fluid level was a bit low so I topped it up and guess what? No more warnings, no more immobilisations, everything working just as it should. Done another 500 miles since then and I am so glad that I didn't set fire to the car as I had been tempted to do.
How difficult would it have been to have a sensor that flashed up TOP UP BRAKE FLUID ?

Thanks for sharing, good to know the symptoms, although I have feeling "immobiliser fault" had nothing to do with it. All other issues seem plausible and related to low fluid level.

That "I've cracked it" feeling of euphoria is now a distant memory. After another 500 miles of smug complacency, the dashboard lit up like Blackpool illuminations and the car died in the middle of a high speed, blind, bend on the A388 in Cornwall. My dearly beloved was not amused. When I said "died" that is exactly what it did. Not a glimmer of power, no hazards, no nothing.
Called out the RAC who arrived 2.5 hrs later to tell me that the alternator had shorted out and killed the battery. They disconnected the alternator and installed a new battery to get the car mobile and I managed to limp to a friendly workshop who were able to fit a new alternator and get me on my way again. Since then I have covered another thousand miles with the car performing better than it ever has before, a pleasure to drive. Then yesterday, driving my grandson to school, up it comes again: ANTI SKID SERVICE REQUIRED, BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY< etc. etc. Same old routine, switch off, wait, switch on, all messages cleared and away we go again. I love this car when it is running as it should but I can't take much more of this s**t.
One other thing I have noticed:For the 2 years up until the time that all this nonsense started, the fuel consumption reading has always been between 49.7 and 50.2 mpg. Over the past 6-8 weeks the reading has been dropping steadily and it is now 45.8. Any ideas?

Default Abs anti skid message on my 62 plate s40

Hello,
I'm feeling a little bit hopeful having read your posts. Has anyone had this repair covered on a 62 plate Drive es?

Since then I've joind this forum and a lot of people reckoned Volvo should cover the cost. Got on to Volvo and questioned this and they put their hands up and have informed me (I have the email if anyone wants proof) that the main dealer will be reimbursing me for the full cost next week.

That's what these forums are all about folks so all I can say is a HUGE thank you.
Hi. Can you please forward me the email as my S40 1.6D DRIVe has just shown this warning. Thanks

Hi all, my V50 1.6 Drive has been showing the Anti-Brake Service required intermittently for some time now as well as EGR valve fault. Replaced EGR today and cleared all faults with VIDA but on my way home from work the Anti-Brake has come on again. After reading some of the comments in this thread i was wondering if anyone knows if Volvo is still covering the cost to repair? I didn't get the fault codes i'm afraid when i had the VIDA plugged in but i can get over the weekend and post.

UPDATE: I have had the engine light come on again stating in VIDA that the EGR voltage is low, i replaced the EGR valve last Thursday 10-12-20 and was clear of this fault but yesterday it decided to come back in. Could this be connected to the same issue as the Anti-Brake problem? also i get a BLIS reduced function message too.
