Default radio - intermitant sound

Hi - ive got an HU-850 (attached to a 2005 V70.....)

It's gone wrong!!

The display comes on, it shows different stations, CD etc

However - nothing from the speakers - except occasionally banging, cracking, unpleasant ear shattering noises - and now on the occasion it works and you can hear the radio, it seems to almost be coming from directly behind the head unit itself - though I imagine it's the centre dash speaker? Maybe though as it's the only speaker (occasionally) working it - to me - just sounds odd?

So....any pointers to as to why??

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin

My first port of call would be to look if you have a separate amplifier under the drivers seat.

Hi, as I found out when I bought my XC70 lux the HU850 head unit is prone to 'issues'. Pops, crackles,no sound, sudden full volume all indicate a failed HU. If you read on here some people have fixed the issue by re-soldering areas on the circuit boards subject to dry/cracked joints. Professional repair, which I looked into, was the wrong side of £200. The dashtop speaker is powered by the HU, the rest are fed from the amp which 'could' narrow down which area on yours has failed. I was tempted by an all singing and dancing after market HU but while I was making up my mind saw an XC being broken on here and bought the working HU850 from it ( cheers Spudd!) Despite the dire comments of them being 'coded to the car' everything( inc parking sensors and steering wheel controls) work as they should - as long as any replacement is more or less the same age, from what I've read and experienced, you should be OK.
Hope this helps
John
