Default d5 engine jammed - very odd !!!

Hi I have a 2006 V70 D5 185 Auto with 200K miles

Went to start it the other day and it tried to start and then just clicked.

After much dismantling I am still not sure what the problem is.

Basically the engine is jammed with a socket on the crank you can only rotate it through about 15% though if you keep rocking it back and forth sometimes it will free up a bit and you can get about 45 degrees of rotation. It rotates fine then comes up hard like a piston has hit a valve.

I have now removed the starter, aux belt, timing belt (which was fine), crankshaft pulley, both camshafts all the rockers and tappets.

All the valves seem fine no damage at the top end.

With a long screwdriver down the injector holes I can see all the pistons can move up and down in the bores as I rotate the crank so not a broken con rod or missing big end cap.

No difference in Neutral.

I am guessing something is jamming the flywheel or torque converter so next job will be to remove the gearbox, not a 5 minute job and will be annoyed if it is not required.

Cant see it being something loose in the sump jamming the crank as that would only be one way.

Could it be something jamming the oil pump ?

Bit of an odd one for sure

Any help much appreciated

Were the crank and camshaft timing marks aligned correctly?

I couldn't really tell as I couldn't turn the crank round to get to TDC

Having thought about it allot this evening the only logical thing I can think of is that 1 of the 6 bolts that hold the torque converter onto the flywheel has worked its way out and is jamming up against the casting ribs on the back of the engine.

Problem is I cant turn the crank round to get to the bolt :-(

Think I will use my stethoscope tomorrow to locate the noise source as it bumps into the stops, pretty sure its the above if it is I can probably use a bit of force to push the steel bolt head past the alloy webs. Maybe help it past by loosening the gearbox to engine bolts 5 mm or so.

cheers Ben

It was the oil pump disintegrated big time inside

guessing it sucked up something metallic that must have fallen off from something on the input pipe then it minced itself

Shame i didn't find this before stripping all the head down but the valves need sorting out anyway
