Now do not use the dash gauge, dip the oil the old fashioned way and am sure what's in there.
It also allows you to do the finger and nose tests on the oil.

What's Police spec when applied to dipsticks?

It was a specification of police forces that their v and xc 70 D5's had a full sized manual dipstick rather than relying on a guage. This is only relevant to P3 cars as up till then P1 and 2 cars had proper dipsticks.

The police spec kit to modify the earlier P3 D5 from technicians dipstick to full sized normal dipstick consists of the dipstick, a dipstick tube with mounting bracket, an O ring and a 7mm bolt, some engines need the cast boss on the block drilled and tapped to take the 7mm bolt mine was already tapped

I did somewhere in the P3 xc70 section list the part numbers and prices if you want them. I had to persuade my dealer that such a kit was available though once presented with the part numbers they ordered the bits which arrived overnight from Volvo HQ.

I would get it checked out ... Have you ever had it calibrated ? This is a mandatory part of the volvo service ..
Having looked into my 'early era' VEA e-dipstick function in some detail, it is widely described as only being able to display either min or max with no intermediate indication. I even started a forum thread where others also made the same observation.

Additionally the action taken by the dealer during an oil service is NOT a calibration... after the oil change the display is merely 'forced' to give a max indication using VIDA only to avoid the situation that might otherwise occur where a car that had been brought to the servicing dealership showing min would continue to show min even after the oil change, at least untill 30km had been driven to allow the display to update. Which would be both confusing and obviously lead to customers complaining!
