XC60 Fuel Guage Problem
Hi Guys,
1st post and not a good one. Picked up a D5 XC60 last week and have drive 428 miles on a full tank, stopped at lights on the way to work and the engine cut out. No fuel warning and still showing 1/4 of a tank and 110 miles predicted. Had to be towed by the AA who then added 4.8 liters (£5) of diesel, still it wouldnt start. AA central tech advised to fill the tank which we did and then it started! The fill to the top took another 52 liters which means I added 57 liters approx in total. So by my count there was 13 liters left in the tank still which means the gauge wasn't far wrong and within the accuracy of the bar graph style display. So any ideas on the fault? fuel system thinking it was empty? I'm waiting for Volvo to some up with some plan of action and meanwhile not letting the tank go below halk! LP |

I would imagine working on logic that the fuel pick up has become dislodged/damaged or stuck and isn't picking fuel up from as low in the tank as it should.I would think providing the sender units accesible it would be a fairly easy fix.

Seems that 1st step is to hook it up to the diagnostics and check for messages, guess after that we are into draining the tank and refilling with the minimum and seeing if it starts? Think this is going to be a bugger to prove.

Just found this after a bit of googling http://www.allworldauto.com/blogs/20...o-xc60-recall/
No obvious way of checking this but will ask the dealer! |

Yes good spot.
Oh well connected the XC up to diagnostics and it confrimed the management system thought it was out of fuel but no actual fault logged. It seems I am to drive around until it happens again Also was helpfully suggested to carry a jerrycan in the boot, this is obviously a good move in a brand new 30K+ vehicle. I know its going to be a bugger to find, but there must be a more proactive method. |

An update
After not accepting that it will never happen again, or that I should drive around with a Jerry can in the boot, the XC60 finally wont back in for some proactive tests this week. And guess what it conked out showing 1/4 tank of fuel remaining and no low fuel light, amazing so there is a problem after all! So far I've been told its not taking the last 1/4 tank of fuel in and is suffering starvation. It had a new fuel tank fitted this morning but still all is not well, unsure how all this will end but not good news for a band new Volvo with less than 1000 miles on the clock. Wonder if this is a one off? LP |

The problem I have is with the fuel gauge - it goes from full to empty quicker than I am able to refill my wallet
