Resisting Temptation.
I am looking to buy a T5 estate, either 850 or P1 V70.
Were these models available with rear facing child seats? More importantly how do you manage to keep your licence clean? I am a sensible driver in my 740, but I used to turn into a hooligan when I got into my wifes Polo G40. They say absolute power corrupts absolutely. I have heard that it is easy to find yourself cruising at 130Mph on the M/way. Are these cars a licence loser for all but the strongest of wills?

Yes, there are plenty out there fitted with the 7 seat conversion.
Have a look at. http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/ in the sales & wants section. This forum is almost exclusively populated by T5 owners, of which I'm one. As far as being corrupted is concerned, yes, there's a strong possibility. These cars were electronically limited to 155MPH. Of course, many of us have had the ECU re-mapped to produce in the region of 300BHP & in the case of the very popular Rica re-map, & maybe others, this limit is removed. For a car of this refinement & performance, they're going for silly (low) money at present. Have fun. Cheers, Chris. |

I've got a road angel which tells me where speed cameras and accident blackspots are. It is no good when a laser is locked on to your car - it does let you know but by then it's too late. Good luck

FWD Vs RWD
Are there any issues with torque steer?
How far can you push the car before understeer? Why did Volvo choose to go FWD (D'oh) Is the AWD a better drive? Better for towing I bet.

Yes, there is torque steer, especially with a modified ECU, but Volvo have a strut brace as an accessory, which improves things considerably. About £75 & easy to fit. As far as understeer is concerned, they hold on pretty well if the suspension is in good nick. If you find yourself understeering, through over-enthusiastic cornering, try a touch of left-foot braking (without coming off the throttle) which will correct it. Please experiment in a controlled environment though.

Either buy a car with cruise control, or failing that fit cruise to whatever you buy. That way when you join the motorway accelerate to your desired cruising speed (keep it below 100 for your licences sake) and you should be fine.
I fitted my 960 GLE with cruise (CD's got it as standard) and it was an easy job to do as the car was pre wired. I now get up to 85/90mph and set it and no longer have to worry about traveling at license losing speeds (remember folks - 30mph over the limit equals a ban). Before I could easily find myself doing 120mph+ without thinking about it. |

Living with the Wolf
Thanks for your support with all my questions.
Got a '95 855 GLE T5 7 seater on Saturday. I expected to take a fright, but the car is really sedate until you smack the ponies real hard! I think my prob will be with watching creeping speed on M/way. I don't think the excuse of 'but the car just wanted to go faster officer' Or 'The car sits njicely at this speed M'lud' Will go down well in court. Still thinking about a Road Angel, will have to see what Santa Xmas brings... My car has cruise, which I find helps, this is my first car with official cruise control. Back in my student days cruise control was foot to floor of the Citroen 2CV and maxing out a 60-65. woo hoo! But once again thanks guys. Lee

Oh yes, the 2CV - had one of those out in Iran We couldn't climb up some mountain roads going forwards, so we used to spin it around and go up in reverse - always made it that way Great memories! I've even thought about getting another to commute it - but they're mostly rusty relics these days...
