Just to say that the sub frame on our old XC90 has surface rust but that is it and has never come up on an MOT. That car is over 15 years old and has cover 256k miles. I live near the sea and have driven through roads flooded with sea water on numerous occasions too. So I don’t think it’s very common to replace it. I had a quick look at the Haynes instructions and they do refer you to other chapters so it is more complex than just the 9 steps.

its worth doing just for peace of mind especially if you plan to keep the car , i spray mine every summer, doesn't take half an hour to do the whole car

Hi,

I also have an XC90 with a very rusty rear sub-frame (the front one is not great either) and wondered if you tackled this job in the end and if you did how difficult it was?

I am considering doing the same on my XC90 and replacing both. Interestingly the rest of the underneath of the car is in perfect condition, it is just the sub frames that are very rusty.

Best wishes

Rob
