Default Diesel go slow

Hi, my wife's V40 diesel, 2001 model, has become hesitant during running, and is pushing out black smoke. Airflow meter seems to be top of the 'this bits gone wrong' chart, anything else I should be looking at?

Ta

black smoke points to incomplete combustion. When was the air filter changed?

Or too much fuel being delivered, but not sure how to correct this one on the V40 yet

Air filter as new. Not turbo. It's the latest type of diesel fitted to the V40, direct injection, 115bhp.

hmmm, dunno much about the direct injection engines, sorry

think its probably diagnostics job

deffinately no turbo tho? i thought all deisles had turbo these days, ha-ho.

i do know that Di engine opperate at much higher pressure than standard, so perhaps headgasket failure? check for loss of water or floaty wax in the water

exesive consumption of oil, etc

it could be overfueling, but thats an ECU job

whats your mileage? (re headgasket)

Alfonz,

When I said not turbo, what I meant was its not the turbo causing the problem. Sorry! It has covered 80,000 miles and has just had the cambelt replaced. This problem was looked at at the same time, and it is the garages opinion that it is the airflow meter. I had just wondered if anyone had come across this problem before. Will be fitting a new bit today, if that don't work it'll be off to the dealers!

Thanks

Gary

EGR valves sticking needs taking out and cleaning, its located under the intake pipe on the intake manifold long tube thing, 3 bolts holding it in place. Be careful removing it cos it will be tight.

It won't be turbo cos when they fail on them they fail big style.

Problem solved! Thanks to Rooster, I looked at the intake manifold, and, whilst it wasn't the EGR, above it where the air intake pipe joins the intake manifold there is an item that had a broken casing and was letting in air directly into the manifold. I'm sure this has a posh name, it is a sort of vacumn operated butterfly valve. And its a third the price of an air flow meter.

result!
