I have the same problem with my s60 on the passenger side, had it over a pit a few times and still cant find anything. Last week we thought it could possibly be the shock so I was going to replace it hoping that would be the problem but having looked around it seems that the prices for used parts are a bit high. Going to keep on trying to find the problem, be sure to post if we have any luck!

I have something that goes "clonk" occasionally as well have it on both drivers and passenger side - and have had it for about 3 years and never found out what it is!

It's not just over bumps but hear it on corners also.

I emptied the boot and also took out spare tyre etc in case it was that moving around - but no..

the driveshaft bolts make an axle ping/knocky sound or possibly engine/gearbox mounts

Offside engine mount. When it loses a lot of rubber, not only does it knock but it also causes the car to lurch in bends.

Other than that, your shocks may well be the culprit.
NEVER have I owned a car so resistant to knock diagnosis.
And I can't remember a time when I wasn't trying to diagnose one knock or another.
I live in a constant state of apprehensive curiosity.

You say 'top bush' - but when my strut top-mount (lower section/rubber seat) went, it made a fearful amount of banging.
