The Best Gearbox Oil
So...
I have searched the forums and I cannot find a decisive opinion on the most suitable gearbox ATF fluid to buy. All I can see is that we should use JWS3309 or ruin your gearbox. Looking at a fully synthetic oil I have found the following oil but other than the 3309 specs I don't know whether this suits - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10L-MANNO...AAAOSwjW5dOT91 Any comments on the best oil to use? I dont want to ruin my new cars box! Nigel. |

Mannol has been used for ages by lots of people and I've not seen any issues reported. If it meets spec., it meets spec. If you want a 'brand' then Mobil's reassuringly expensive

From feedback from members who experimented with oils 5-6 years ago - the M&S version would be this : AMSOIL Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
But you won't tell the difference, for a fixed investment I would stick with Mannol and change it more often (50k ?)

Check your owner's manual to confirm the exact transmission fluid you need, as the XC90's transmission fluid spec did change at some point from JWS3309 to JWS3324 or AW-1 around 2012, if I recall correctly. So basically, if your car is 2011 or older, it'll be JWS3309 that you need. If its 2012 or newer, it'll be JWS3324 or AW-1. Double check that though in your owner's manual to be safe.
If your car takes JWS3309, Smith & Allen is another option: https://www.smithandallan.com/produc...-aisin-warner/

Brilliant - thank you all for your replies.
I'm all for spending on quality oils as I now stick to the Liqui Moli 0/30 engine oil as it has rave reviews and seems to leave my engine running nicely. However, i also dont like the idea of spending £120 on Volvo oil for the gearbox that is the same as a better value product. I'm going to buy the 20 littres Mannol oil and run and flush it 4 times to freshen up the system. Keeping the fluids in good quality is important and the last thing i need is a failed gearbox ontop of my T6 slipping gearbox which needs sorting! Nigel. |

I used the Mannol jws3309 in my 2010 car with 196k miles. Used the drop and fill method 4 times and will do again soon. I’ve driven several thousand miles since and the gearbox is working perfectly - that said it was fine pre-change. From memory only about 2.5 litres Came out each drop. I’ve got Vida now so will check the levels
Properly - I just put back in exactly what came out. Thanks James |

Mannol user here; XC70 with the AW50/55 box using JWS3309. Taken it from 125k to 178k in about 30 months. I swap out 6 litres every 8 to 10k when I change the engine oil.

Given the TF-80SC is a Toyota (Aisin) box, I'd suggest Automatic Transmission Fluid Type T-IV (Specification: JWS 3309).
It's well priced at Toyota dealers worldwide. |

As correctly stated above, c2012 the spec changed away from 3309 to AW1/3324, so TF80=3309 isn't invariable.

Volvo changed the fluid spec for their cars using the TF80 in MY 2011 I believe from 3309 to 3324. However they didn't change the spec for the XC90 using the same gearbox until MY2013 for some reason.
Ultimately though - it's irrelevant as a pre 2011 box will quite happily run on 3324 and vice versa... the later spec i slightly lower viscosity for economy reasons. My only counsel would be not to mix them - if you do change spec you should do a full flush. I strongly suspect (rather than know) the XC90 changed later due to the box being slightly less reliable in that platform as a result of its significant extra weight and hence Volvo stuck with the higher viscosity oil.
