Question Volvo 164 B30A inlet / exhaust manifold removal ?

My 164 from 1973 was purchased after having stood still in a garage for 4 years.

After an effort to put the car back on the road within 16 miles one the core plugs leaked water.

Examination has revealed that several core plugs are in poor shape.

However to remove the core plugs on the side of the block with the inlet/exhaust manifold you need to remove the manifold.

I have managed to remove all the nuts on the manifold with the exception of 2 nuts which are located centrally under the manifold and appear to be unreachable between no 3 and 4 cylinders.

The nuts are above the metal return pipe for the heater system – making access more difficult.

Does anybody have any hints / tips for removing the inlet / exhaust manifold on a B30 engine?

So the answer are offset spanners and a bit of patience.

Managed to get the inlet/manifold off but it took 20 mins to remove the last 3 nuts.

With the manifold gone the core plugs are exposed and I will change them all.

The problem with replacing the core plugs with the engine in situ is having enough room to swing the hammer to punch in the centres. Heavy hammer and a small socket, mind your fingers! Good luck with that. Clean and fully derust the holes in the block. A thin bead of Marine JB Weld is good where the plug seats especially if the block has some pitting.

so there is a picture of the manifold.

There is a 'mixing' unit at the centre of the manifold - should I open it and check it ?

Does anybody knows how this works ?

From looking at the gcp/se site there seems to be nothing under that cover on the manifold, but it may give access to those flap spindles if doing a thorough clean-up or replacing them. Its been a long time since I stripped mine.......

There should be a butterfly, driven by a spring which will release by temperature.
My tip: have a look after the older version. Your version is a emission crap. There will be no problem to find the carb version without this ****
Good luck, Kay

So the head has come off now and revealed that the water pump was bodged.

Someone has used lots of sealant when they fixed the water pump instead of using the proper gaskets.

This has resulted in the waterways becoming blocked.

Now I need to remove the water pump which is fitted with a viscous coupling.
