Default Sucking noise under load and a bit of smoke

My 2005 v50 2.0D has developed a strong fault

When driving and putting the turbo under load there is a loud whooshing sucking noise and the power doesn't deliver and there is a small amount of smoke coming out the exhaust

When driving normally and not putting my foot down its ok, but as soon as the foot goes down and the turbo kicks in the noise comes the smoke starts and the power is lacking,

Also when driving along at 70 ish so the turbo is under a small amount of load the car seems to go on and off the power like the pressure is coming and going quite quickly

Any suggestions on what to look at first?

I'm thinking sticky egr? Or split turbo pipe?

Sounds like turbo boost is escaping, not making it's way to the intake manifold.

and yes, it surely can be caused by a split turbo pipe/hose, or a loose pipe connection on either side of the intercooler, or a loose band on the level of the throttle body.. you'll have to get under the car and visually inspect them.

If no splits or loose connections are found, then it could be caused by the turbo vanes being stuck in the open position .. their movement is governed by the pneumatic turbo actuator which in turn gets it's air from the electro-pneumatic valve "TCV" situated on the inner side of the battery compartment, easily identified by it's atypical brown colour, so also check the two small hoses connected to it, and it's power supply.. if the TCV itself is faulty, then a diagnostic code would be present.

I don't think a sticky EGR valve would cause the symptoms you're experiencing, because when they stick they throw the car in to limp mode and CEL appears on the dash.

Hi
Found a split in the plastic pipe to the front left of the engine bay
Not sure what it's called but I think it's the route the air goes into
The intercooler?
Anyway I taped it up with self amalgamating tape and it solved the
Problem and lasted for a 100mile drive until I got road rage and properly booted it!!! Haha
At least I know what to change now!

Duct tape may work better

They should be quite cheap from a scrap yard too!

That's the top front right, it's your left facing the car

Nevermind, well that pipe comes from the intercooler's outlet and attaches to the throttle body to pass on turbo boost pressure into the intake manifold.. so it's not the route that goes into the intercooler, but the opposite, it's leaving the intercooler going to the engine.

8) is the turbo, here's where boost "hot air" originates.
4) Hot boost travels along this pipe.
3) Hot boost is cooled here, the intercooler.
7) Cooled boost travels along this damaged pipe of yours from the intercooler to reach the intake manifold.

Hi
Mine split in the same place. A modified pipe was supplied from Volvo not cheap. if I remember about £80. Not too bad to replace but the bumper does have to be removed

Thanks everyone
The diagram is ace I was struggling to determine the route from the air box into the turbo and beyond!

Is there an official name for that pipe if I am calling around to find one ?
