Broken front springs are common on these, check struts whilst you are at it.

Right.. I've sent an email to the dealership I bought the car from this morning. Telling them that I think I've diagnosed the problem and it's the brake pads that their mechanic fitted and could they please take a look at it and rectify the problem if this is the cause?

I'll see what they say..

Update: Dealership got back to me and said that I need to take this up myself with the mechanics that did the brake pad installation.. So I've forwarded them the email.. I feel like the dealership are trying to absolve themselves from the situation.

Certainly sounds like it. I'd be suspicious that the pads fitted aren't OEM Volvo ones. I've never had Volvo rear pads that rattle in the caliper.

They should make good as it was their doing by the sounds of it.

Well it sounds like the dealership have washed their hands with it and the garage haven't got back to me yet.. If they haven't emailed by Friday I will call them up as I get out early from work then.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to pass any further business past that dealership then. Amazingly, I once had a Volvo dealer do a similar thing. When I took it back after the service due to rattling pads they admitted they didn't have new pads in stock at the time so they put ones in from someone else's car!

Didn't take much persuasion to get them to fix that outrage.

Question

I took it to the garage that fitted the brake pads on Saturday. They said that they would have fitted the pads as instructed by the dealership who may not have supplied them with a "fitting kit" which would include the anti-rattle springs or whatever..

Anyway they got my car up on the ramp and took a look, they confirmed that the brakes were safe and let me look under the car and showed me the problem (you can pull on the caliper and there's some give, which is causing the rattle).

They then phoned the dealership to ask them if they'll pay for the kit to sort it, they refused to pay for it.. Surprise surprise so I took the car away as I'd rather keep any work for my trusted garage when I'm back at my parents' over Christmas.

So.. my plan now is to get this rattle sorted by my trusted garage over Christmas, can anyone let me know what it is that I need exactly?

If I buy a pair of rear Volvo OEM brake pads will they come with the anti-rattle springs, or do I need to get hold of a "fitting kit"? Or can I just buy the springs and fit them to the third party brake pads that are currently fitted?

Thanks.
