Volvo xc60 power assisted boot issue
I started having trouble with my power assisted boot around 3 months ago. Opening the boot was no issue, but when closing, the boot would stop after moving around 10cm. Gradually this got worse, and started to creek until one day before heading on holiday the boot jammed and one of the struts bent and would not budge. I ended up having to remove the strut in order to close the boot.
Volvo main dealer wanted over £600.00 to fix the issue - to replace the auto struts / motors etc... I searched these forums but no one seemed to have another resolution, so i thought Id post here to let others know that there is a cheaper fix! I had CVS - Cardiff Volvo specialists take a look at it for me. They removed the power assisted struts and replaced them with manual gas struts. They unplugged all the connections and the boot switch still worked as meant to. They did have to change the ball screws on the brackets to match the manual struts but it works a charm if your not bothered by the troublesome, and very slow moving auto-power assisted struts. |

What year is your XC60?
There was a recall in out 13 plate XC60 a couple of years ago for a problem with the tailgate. |

Mine is a '13 plate, but not from new - I guess i was too late for the recall as the main dealer didn't mention it!

Solved on my 2011 D5 215 (2012 model)
I know this thread is old but I hope this helps someone else as I had exactly the same failure, drivers side strut became swollen, noisy, eventually broke.
Long story short I ignored the dealer about replacing both and needing a software update and just replaced one for part cost of £235+VAT. I tested it and hey presto it worked like a charm, back to the nice calm sound I'd always had and NO software update required. So instead of opting for gas struts you may just swap the broken one out, no promises this will be the same for everyone but it certainly worked for me. I found an excellent video on youtube on how to replace and took less than 30 minutes, all you need is a hex bit and a flat head screw driver to complete the job. |
