Default play in inner CV joints or differential?

Hi all,

I was chasing excessive noise on the motorways. I was thinking towards cupped tires, wheel bearing or stuck brake pads.

when I jacked up the front end of the car and rotated the wheels I was shocked by the amount of forward/backward play. A distinct clicking noise was present when moving back and forth. See youtube video.

I tried to locate it down to maybe one of the drive shafts, however both sides at the front end have exactly the same amount of play in them. I am a little bit worried about potential very expensive gearbox issues. This might be related to some previous questions I had regarding a knocking sound when shifting gears and changing load. Also some wobbly feeling when accelerating. This might be the source of these problems as well.

It looks like there is no play near the wheel itself and it comes from all the way down at the differential/inner CV joint.

anyone who can shed some light on this?
