V50 alternator change
Hi all, my alternator was smoking and hot, battery light on and appeared to be drawing a current from the battery, booked it in to a local garage, disconnected the main lead to the alternator, I didn't fancy it going up in smoke, job was cheap enough but car lost its memory from the key and wouldn't start, car went to an indipendant Volvo garage and was reprogrammed, cost £150, it's a 2 litre diesel, surely there is a battery backup incase of such failures

From what I remember, sadly, this is a 2.0D only issue. None of the other engine setups behave this way in our cars.

V50 alternator change out
Hi
I am in a real fix I had power failure warning and after looking online I found out it is the alternator that's goosed, now I thought a few bolts and electrical sockets job done. I have been fighting with this all day, the problem I have is there is a fourth bolt holding alternator on, bottom right hand side looking from top of engine, I can't get a spanner on it from the top, on the bottom there is what I think is the water pump in the way, I would appreciate any help or tips on how to remove the alternator 😁 I have removed the air lines from top side to give better access I have a v50 1.6 diesel, on a 2007 plate Last edited by Chizz; May 8th, 2019 at 14:25. Thanks
Hi PaddyB
Thanks for the reply but it is not possible to use socket and ratchet, it is damn near impossible to get a spanner on, you can get open end of spanner on just, but most likely if forced it will slip off and chew the bolt head, I am now wondering if Volvo have a special spanner which I have no doubt will be costly. I am going to put car into dealer and let them do it |

According to the Haynes Manual it is a "2 spanner" job (should not be too difficult). The question is if you have removed enough "stuff" surrounding the alternator (throttle body assembly, air con compressor loosened on 84kW engines, ...).
