V50 2.4i Exhaust issue

Hi all, my 54 plate, 98k 2.4i has an issue with the exhaust when cold. It sounds like a tank on initial start up and when still cold, I have to accelerate to motorway speed from a short on slip and the noise in the cabin is horrendous. Took it to an exhaust garage who couldn't find a leak?!?

Following a bit of reading, it could either be the flexi section or a blocked cat? Does anyone have any experience or similar symptoms?

The T5 uses the same engine block but a different exhaust manifold but they can suffer leakage from the manifold gasket due to the bolts working loose, might be the same on yours? the noise can sound like a screech.

Leaking flexi pipes can be hard to spot but tell-tale black soot marks should be present if leaking.
