I wonder what spares Irving Gordon used to carry around ?

He used to make sure he regularly serviced and really looked after his Volvo...and he did a few trouble free miles

I tend to carry the old parts removed on the last service so the old belt, old plugs, leads, cap, rotor and points. Might also carry an old spare set of hoses but that is about it

Irv's P1800 was featured on an episode of Chasing Classic Cars (USA) after he passed. There was a shot of what was in his trunk, it was jam packed with spare parts.

Yes as you said after he passed so how do you know he carried them with him of they were left with the car ?
Even if he did his millage was exceptional and proves the point of good maintenance. God rest his sole.

I recall some discussion on the show that he carried them.

Growing up in the 70 and 80s dad always carried spares and most folks would have I reckon back then. You would have been waiting a long time for the AA back then in north Queensland. :-)

I have a small tool box with metric wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers. Plus a set of points and a condenser. I haven't logged many miles, but have been fortunate not to have broken down.

A few years ago, I read a book about this American who drove across Siberia with a couple of Russians. Not speaking the language, he sent them off to buy a new van for the trip, but they returned with an old rattletrap and some Vodka. They set out and the van invariably broke down. The technique was to walk along the highway until you found the necessary parts for your repair laying around in the roadway or on the shoulder. The roads were so rough, that parts would keep falling off the vehicles, available to the next guy with the talent and in need. Apparently one of the Russian companions was a genius at making field repairs and kept the van going.

Thanks everyone. I wasn’t expecting to divide opinion with this quaestion, I absolutely understand the need for servicing and keeping in good order. BUT you never know! So, I’m clear now on what’s needed. £100 of parts for Mr AA and hopefully we can cover most eventualities, those parts he won’t carry/ you can’t get at short notice from Halfords.
Excellent input as ever everyone, many thanks.

Remember that our older Volvos use virtually no metric nuts and bolts. They are AF. A box or tool roll with a cheap set of those should help you out of needed. Cross and flat bladed screwdrivers, pliers/mole grips etc. The standard Volvo tool bag will have a plug/wheel nut box spanner. Recovery with a suitable breakdown cover is quite cheap with classic insurance if it happens to come to the crunch.
