Thank you,i'll take a look.
But if there is a problem with immobilizer itself, don't you think that i couldn't be able to start the car?Right? I have aftermarket alarm system installed since i bought the car back in 2000.,is it possible that they messed up something during installation of alarm system? Everything is normal with the car, except this fact that i can't read engine codes. Misha.

I would not be surprised if the aftemarket alarm was the cause of your problem.

I'll try with those cheap obdII code readers like maxi scan ms300.If i still have the same problem, then i'll drive the car to the guys who installed alarm system to see is there a problem in wiring somewhere.
Oh...i forgot to mention....factory alarm system(Volvo guard) is completely removed from under the dash, where it's supposed to be.The place where it should be is empty. Anyway, alarm system i have in my car have everything what Volvo guard should have, not just locking & unlocking the doors. P.S. Is this something i can do myself or i need to take the car to alarm shop? Regards, Misha.

Have a look at the wiring diagrams, I expect the diagnostic 'k' line has not been re-connected where the immobilizer was removed.

That "k" line you talk about...is it going from pin 7 at obdII connector?
I looked at wiring diagrams for '97 850 and,as far as i could see, that would be pin 7.What should i do next?To track the wire from pin 7 to immobilizer or what? One more thing....I removed fuse for immobilizer and car wouldn't start. When i re-connected it is started right away. So,i guess i still have immobilizer...but according to fuse box list,i have two immobilizers. Happy New Year to you guys! Misha.

Yes 'k' line is from pin 7 of the OBDII connector.
Have a look at page 36 of the wiring diagrams, you will see for Motronic 4.4 the 'k' line is switched by the immobilizer (page 34) via terminals 3 & 4, it then goes on to the engine ECU terminal B36. You need to trace this wiring through from the ECU (B36), via the immobilizer, to pin 7. Note that you need also to understand how the aftermarket alarm system is wired, the ECU won't commuicate unless it's fully powered up with the ign at posII. |

Thank you Chris_Rogers.
I'll try to trace it down as soon as it gets warmer outside, because my garage is very tight and l don't have proper lightening in there.Temperatures are below zero Celsius these days. Thanks again to all of you.I'll report back as soon as i find out what is the problem with my car. Misha.
