V50 General : Changing battery

Hi folks. Our V50 diesel has been pretty much unused throughout the current virus situation and the battery has given up the ghost, can get it started but won’t hold a charge more than a day. I have a new battery to fit but just wanted to check there’s nothing I need to watch to ensure I don’t immobilise the car etc or mess anything up in that regard by having the battery disconnected for a few minutes? I have had mine disconnected multiple times, no problem. Just to be sure I lowered all windows first, so I have access to the hood release at any time.
The clock will need to be set after installation.

i did mine last year just a straight swop over . turn on the side/headlights remove the battery fit new , the lights are left on so the ecu wont get a power surge . not read of any problems on a volvo but many other makers over the years have had this problem, so best to be safe its not worth the risk

IF there is an issue with the SRS system and the airbag fires you really dont want your arm through the wheel

Why would you ever put your arm through the steering wheel?

I think to avoid scaring future forum readers; there's no way that changing a car's main battery would cause the Air Bag to deploy.

The SRS system is designed to fire air bags upon a large impact to the car's structure and depending on if the ignition is on, who's sitting where, etc etc.

Before changing the main battery; remove ignition keys and wait for the CEM to go to 'sleep' - takes a minute or two (you'll hear the tiny Cabin air sensor Fan stop) but best wait for over 5 mins whilst doing something else.

I did mine once and left the windows open but then had to 'teach' the window switches where the very top and bottom of the windows were so I'd leave windows closed, shut the doors but leave unlocked, and keep the keys WITH YOU.

Remember to disconnect the Earth Lead First.....and re-connect last - this is best practice on any vehicle.

Its best to stick to basic advised safety methods .. NO of course it wont go off , BUT planes never crash either do they ?

I recently had the battery in my V50 die.
Was dreading it after reading some horror stories regarding SRS lights not going out etc.
Unlocked the car with the old battery, disconnected it after about 5 minutes later.
Connected the new one up (+ve lead first, grease the terminals etc) and put the keys in the ignition and switched it on.
It was absolutely fine.
The only thing I needed to do was reporgram the drivers seat to my preferred position, other than that it was absolutely fine.
My relief was massive!
