Default VW DSG Golf not a nice drive!

Happened to have a drive in a DSG Golf today. Is it me, or is the DSG gearbox truly rubbish? Jerky would best describe its unpleasing progress. Reminded me of all that was bad about the Honda Civic I-Shift I briefly owned. Yuk.

Bro-in-law has a 2016 Golf R with DSG, I had a ride in it from brand new - the gear changes were super fast and unnoticeable; I always understood the DSG to be 'the' gearbox to have.

I know they need servicing at certain intervals - what mileage was this Golf you drove?

My son has an Edition 30 with over 108k on the clock. His DSG box is as smooth as silk.

My son had Passat R36 with a DSG gearbox. Sold it with 90k on the clock with no gearbox issues at all.

Oil changes are very important or you will have problems.

VERY expensive to repair.

I have had 2 VAG cars with DSG. A very early incarnation from 2006 was ok however the DSG in my 2013 Passat was great, smooth, quick changing, still perfectly ok when sold at 115k miles. Too many owners skip servicing which is essential.

Wife worked for a local VW dealer for 17 years and has had many DSG VW's as company cars, I love them tbf but my prev Audi had a DSG and although it was quick and seamless I found it lacking compared to the ZF 8 speed.

I have just changed from DSG Skoda's @ work (to Auto Ceed's) and the 7 we have have been faultless over a combined 800k miles.

DSG boxes are one of the best auto (well electronically controlled manual) boxes available, and are very reliable if they are routinely serviced.

Agreed and just to add the service interval was c38k iirc and cost around £210 @ the Audi dealer.

Thanks all. I did wonder if it was just this particular car, as there are so many DSG VWs on the road they can't all be bad!

Cheers

Father has a MK2 Octavia VRS with the DSG, although not jerky, it's rarely in the right gear and you can count on a clock how long it takes to drop a gear when you put your foot down. Awful box in my opinion.
