2002 S80 starting problem
Our brilliant 2002 S80 PL02GWD has developed a starting problem ,we have had AA go thro a thourogh check battery, fuses, plugs ( changed recently) ,fuel , spark etc all good ,his diagnostic laptop tells him it could be a timing issue.
Had timing belt changed 100,00 ( 118,000 presently ) normally runs beautifully. Any ideas in garage atm but mech scratching his head a bit, don't wanna spend too much on it , several other non related problems ( elec window, headlight prob, boot lock issue,) just wanna keep it going till next MOT ,insurance, tax, Any help suggestions much appreciated. |

Correct plugs? I used the wrong ones in my 2002 and the car ran OK for a brief while then wouldn't start.
When was the fuel filter last changed (my favorite thing to ask)? You said fuel checked out OK. Did your mechanic have a VIDA? A bad CKS (CranKshaft Positioning Sensor) can result in a "no start" scenario. Been there twice with different vehicles but got a code both times. Could a screwy ETM cause a "no start"? I'm thinking it might. |

Not sure what equipment AA patroller had just a plug-in device he used and cleared all faults, plugs changed a while ago, looking back it could be an intermittent problem , because very occasionally it would cut out soon after starting less than 2 mile 5 mins then start immediately then no problem for quite a while.
AA lad was very good , very thorough . What’s an ETM ? Thanks for the suggestions and the prompt reply |

Hi.
There is a Cam Reset Valve or more commonly known on Volvos as the VVT Valve. (Variable Valve Timing). These are known to get stuck due to a build up of crud. Normally , the car will start but be down on power. Don`t know which engine you have but if it`s the 6 cylinder then there are 2 Valves ,one on inlet cam and one on exhaust. If one or both Valves are stuck then the engine timing will be "out". |
