Hello all. Just bought a volvo and just joined this site. The car(55 s60 2l petrol, 115k, well looked after) is lovely but the steering is heavy/stiff as hell, feels dangerous to drive. What is the likely problem?

Default Welcome!

It could be one of several things; as always start with the easy stuff:
1) Check the level of the P/S fluid in the reservoir
2) What colour is the fluid? New is a pale(ish) green liquid but folks sometimes use red fluid in error - this will cause problems.
3) The rack could be worn out
4) The power steering pump could be worn out
5) The universal joint on the steering column that connects the rack could be corroded and stiff
6) Can you get both wheels off the ground ie on axle stands and try and operate the steering? Check etc for noises, roughness etc

Start with the easy stuff; somebody on here will have had the same problem and you can always use the 'search' facility up in the top right hand corner.
HTH, good luck!

Check your tyres are inflated correctly.
This is the most basic check!

Thanks for the replies. Checked the fluid. Correct level but RED. Will have a go at changing it myself when I find out how. Thanks again.

Wrong fluid flush thoroughly and use correct Pentosin fluid. You may first lift the reservoir and pour out the old fluid - use a large rag to cover everything.

If it's still stiff, may check if the car has variable power steering assist - an electric plug is present on the steering rack - this part may be faulty.

Default Search function.....

Use the search and you'll find various methods to change fluid and all the hideous things red fluid might do to you steering rack..... I used a turkey baster to change mine and put several litres of fluid through until it came green (it was the right stuff CHF11S but old and discoloured). I think it's possible to disconnect the small return line at the top of the tank (collecting the discharged liquid) while getting somebody to keep the tank topped up with the new stuff. Maybe have a quick drive to make sure all the recesses of the system have been purged ( or jack the car up and go from lock to lock) with fresh fluid and repeat.....keeping your fingers well and truly crossed.
Good luck, keep us posted if it has worked or not?
Cheers,
Nobby

Changed the fluid, nice fresh green stuff. Turkey baster, disconnected return hose, turned steering wheel back and forth to pump out all old fluid, kept reservoir topped up with new fluid, job done. UNFORTUNATELY steering is still stiff and just awful to drive..Taking it in for an MOT (it is due) at the local volvo today see what the experts say. Thanks to everyone who posted will keep posted after tomorrow.
