Question D2 - D3 - D4 what's the difference in MPG ?

Am interested to know what MPG people are getting in real life, between the D2, D3, and D4 and D5 engines, in the later C30, S40 cars..

I appreciate the trip computers and published figures are optimistic, also do any of these more recent engines suffer with DPF issues?

have a v50 d3, not worked it out by actual fuel in/out but off the trip computer, i see long term average of 37-40mpg when doing town and short journeys, but long motorway average is 50-54mpg. pretty much made it from Edinburgh to lemans on a tank each way (via hull zeebrugge with some horrendous traffic)

We have a V60 D2, and a V60 D4, around town they average pretty much the same, the D4 averages more mpg on a long journeys, probably due to lower revs at 70-80mph than the D2, I'm sure if you drove them both at 55 the D2 may get better mpg, but driving normally theres not a lot in it, around town they both average low 40's best on a run from the D2 is 45-46, D4 is about 47-48 on the same journey

Previous C70 D5 manual would average 46-48mpg on my usual weekly round of 15-20 mile runs from cold. Current C70 D3 Geartronic gets 43-45mpg average on exactly the same journeys, which are mainly cross-country with very little urban/traffic. That's calculated brim-to-brim.

Thanks for the info guys,

proghound, interesting comparison, was your C70 a euro 4/185bhp version? figures seem very good, but maybe its manual as it appears autos are less economical, or perhaps the D3 isnt so good on fuel? but curious as the 2.4 D5 engine more economical vs the 2.0L D3.

scooby, are your V60's manual or auto?, very interesting..seems like the fuel economy not far off the D2 have you had any dpf type 'soot filter full' type issues with the D4 and are you doing many very short journeys?

My D2 DRIVe V50 averaged a genuine measured 56 MPG average over my 18 month, 34k mile ownership. Good, but my current Octavia vRS DSG does 49 MPG and is considerably nicer to drive on account of not being horrifically slow.

Used to have an S40 D5 automatic. Average mpg was around 38, mostly cross country driving. Never had any DPF issues in the 3 years I owned the car.

remapped 2011 d4 s40, (r design, if it makes a difference!)

my average back and fourth work is 51mpg[trip computer], which is a mix of a and b roads

on long journeys (not breaking speed limits) i regularly see 57 - 63mpg on the trip.[usually not driven hard]

i once managed an actual 77mpg when cruising down to the euro tunnel [250mile] with cruise control set for 56mph, but it was VERY dull, i don't recommend it! (56mph is approx 1450rpm in 6th in my car)

My old D5 was Euro 5 / 180bhp and yes it was a manual. The 5-speed Geartronic box for the 180/185bhp D5 was always somewhat inefficient and from what I've read would often limit the average fuel consumption to the mid- to high-30's MPG. The 6-speed one fitted to my D3 seems not to be a burden particularly, hence why I'm getting as close as I am to my D5 manual's figures. With both the old and new cars I have continued to drive with a light foot and plenty of anticipation. I suspect that out of a D3 manual C70 I might get slightly more MPG than I did on my D5 manual.

The 5-cylinder 2.0 D3 and D4 are both basically the same engine as the final incarnations of the 2.4 D5, except with a shortened stroke. Due to the different torque maps applied to the D5 180/185 in auto and manual formats, I think the best comparisons would be between a D5 manual and D4 manual, or between a D5 Geartronic and a D3 Geartronic.

We've had no issues with either V60 (both manuals) with clogging, but both were higher mileage when we got them 109k on the D2, and 123k on the D4, our commutes are short mines about 12 miles a day my other halfs is less, but generally we give them a longer drive every month.

I've done the same commute for 5 years on various deisels, mondeo TDCI, Lexus IS220D, C30 D3 remapped, and the existing D2 & D4 and I've never had an issue with them clogging up, I think as long a you do longer journeys every month you wont have an issue. We generally do a 70-80 mile journye at least once a month and normally a longer 300-350 mile journey 5/6 times a year.

I take my MPG figures from the trip so I'm not sure how accurate they are. From personal experience I would have the D3/D4 over the D2, the D2 seems to have more issues than any other deisel engines on here, but equally well you get plenty of owners that have no issues. But overall the D3/D4 are more enjoyable to drive and have a lot more poke, dont get me wrong on a motoway or tootling about the D2 is great, but it definately lacks power and is not as fun to drive, and in the real world, in normal driving conditions (not trying to hyper mile) there is really not much in it.

Best advice go and try all the options and make an informed decision.
