You have also posted in the phase 3 forum which is for cars from 2007 so quite different to the layout for a 2002 car. |

Just a daft question, is it stop/start?
If so the steering goes heavy when stationary as the engine stops (and the pump) |

How hard is replacing the PAS pump in the P3 S80?
My pump has started to go on the blink. Removing and cleaning the reservoir has improved it somewhat but the PAS is pants to non existent at idle. Is there any sense in getting a second hand pump off a newer car? I've heard that 2009-onwards pumps don't die in the same way and it's £300 cheaper if that's the case. Do I need to replace all the pipework, and if so, how much would that be setting me back? |

Normal fix is pump and pipes and hope the rack survives as the crud can get into it and send it south. Once resolved the real cure is to change the fluid and flush the system every 2 years. The corrosion inhibitors die with age/use and the metal pipes corrode so changing the fluid keeps the inhibitors fresh. Volvo must have known about the problem but did nothing because the problem rarely appeared within warrantee period and they were heading towards electric power steering. Changing the fluid has never been on the service schedule but there are vidios on how to do it on here and the Web, I have found 2 or 3 litres of fluid is enough to flush and refill, job takes me about an hour and a half on the drive. Just for reference it's a Ford fluid even in volvo bottles. Paul. |

Then cleaned filter on it own and got about 4 weeks out of it, repeated this a cpl time until I got a new reservoir and installed it, that was about 12 months ago and no return of the symptoms. |
