Default fault codes

i have read in other posts about a black box which enables you to read any fault codes you may have.the haynes manual says it is fitted on the near side spring turret but i can't find one anywhere.do all cars have them or only selected models/engines.mine is a 1990 240glt 2.3 injection.

None of the experts seem to be responding to your question, so here's my bit.
You would know if your car has the diagnostic facility because there would be an orange Lambda light in the row of square lights below the speedometer. This comes on when you turn on the ignition, but goes out when the engine is running. If it stays on, it means the unit has detected an error somewhere, and that is where the black box comes in, because you can call up the codes and interpret them. If you haven't got the light, or it goes out normally, then all is well and don't worry.
I think they came in about your time, or soon after, but I don't know. Mine (93) has the full works - two buttons for reading ignition and fuel system codes.
The box, if you have one, is about 2" by 1 1/2" by 1 1/2", with a probe on the end of a short length of black wire, normally parked in clip on the side of the box. The box is on the rear side of the left-hand turret, just in front of the wiper motor.

Hope this helps,
Cliff Pope
