Default Data Sim

Apologies to hijack this post but I was wondering what is the point of having a data port - is it just for system updates?

I have just purchased a new Volvo (awaiting delivery) and not sure why having your car as a wireless hotspot is required?

I also have unlimited teathering on my mobile so, would I even need a data sim anyway.

Apologies for the hijack and the stupid question

Matt

If you have plenty of data on your monthly allowance, you can easily do without an extra data SIM for the car. You can tether your car to the phone wi-fi hotspot.

I just collected my 2020 XC90 R Design and Dealer provided me with a Vodafone sim which I believe lasts a year with 100GB of data. Only issue is they couldn’t get it to work yet.

Try the sim in your phone to register it, then put it in your car.

bad move , when you fit it to the car it is locked to the car somehow ... instructions say only to use it with the one car .

My friend did this in his RR Velar, twice and locked himself out of the 3 SIM cards. I told him to just pop it in the holder and use it, but he read the cover and took it literally and registered the cards in his phone before popping them in his car. Big mistake!

Strange?

My current PAYG 3 12GB Data SIM card (which expires on the 3rd September) has been used in an old MotoG mobile, a HUAWEI CarFi and is now in a HUAWEI E8372 usb stick.
I never had to register it, has worked on roaming, etc, with no problems.
Only problem, I have lost the total data used, but from past experience, I estimate that only around 5.5GB of data has been used.
I could log into the 3 website and input all details of the sim, but I have never run out of data, in the past.
