rear seat belts
I'm looking for information on fitting a diagonal seat belt in the middle rear seat (where there is currently only a lap belt) - we have 2 year old triplets who are growing out of their baby seats but the next style of car seats all seem to need diagonal belts - has anyone had this done or got any advice? we've got a 1992 Volvo 240 torslander

RE: rear seat belts
According to my information on the 240 range none of them had three-point safety belts fitted in centre rear seat position. You will have to update to a 940 estate post '93 to get three-point seat belt in middle rear seat. It might be possible that the rear seat backs from an 850 may fit your 240 without too much coaxing as the 850 is narrower inside than a 940, but the mountings may be different. All the best, Peter. |

RE: rear seat belts
http://www.securon.co.uk/seat_belts_firstframe.htm has info on 3 rd Lap and Diagonal seat belts which may mean you can keep the 240. Installation info is downloadable on the Securon website, so you can see if would suit. The luggage space is slightly affected by the installation process. I have not fitted one, but had investigated this type of belt to fit an Escort Estate ( the wife's car as she won't drive a Volvo )

RE: rear seat belts
Hi, i have done this before with some success.
I made a plate to bolt to the boot floor just behind the seat. It stood almost as high as the seat, about an inch short, and a right angle plate was welded to the top. I then drilled a hole in the plate and bolted a 200 saloon rear belt to it. I tested this with a very heavy man sat in the seat belted up correctly. It passed with no problems. I then tried it with a 740 engine strapped in and again it passed with no problem. Without wishing to appear rude, i am sure your children dont weigh as much as an engine and dont have the same sharp edges. I cannot remember the thickness of the plate used but i think it was 1cm plate. The upright plate will flex a minimal amount but will not move forward if fixed in a position so that it touches the back of the seat when in its usual position. Hope this helps. regards. Keith |
