Wow! what an exchange.

My way is even easier, it involves neither props or hinge removal. I did away with the wires through the hinges altogether, it seemed like such a bad design.

My tailgate wiring now goes via a loop on the passenger compartment nearside. Various bits of colour coded wire (rescued from a breakers yard) were used to extend the loom across the car to the nearside, routed through a bit of the sheathing down into the tailgate and then everything carefully soldered and heat shrinked together.

It works beautifully if you're happy with the small loop inside the car. It is not visible in the rearview.

I'll happily try and expand on the technique if you need me to, I wrote it down and took a few pics.

Wagoneer is right imo. The wire through the hinge system is fandamentally flawed. Any replacement will eventually fail again, one wire at a time. Cut out all the bother and just have a loop of ordinary wires, either down a bit of thin plastic tube, or taped together.

Ron,
You might find something useful here. One links to a rerouting project, the other one goes through the hinges.

Hope this helps.

As to the wiring failing again, the original lasted 15 years,if the unused part of the wire lasts half that long I would think it would have gone to the great scrapyard in the sky,if it's a working model and not one that just sees daylight on sunny days and shows.

I would agree with Wagoneer. I have repaired the tailgate electrics many times and just drop the cables down from the ceiling and reconnect with little electrical connector blocks. I think it's good because you get to find out what all the wires do and when there's a problem in the future say with the heated window not working you know what wire to follow. Anyway I like my Volvo's to look lived in !!
