Volvo 240 GL (B200E) 1989 fuel pump
I have a high pitched buzzing sound comming from my fuel tank.
On reading about this on the web it would seem I need a new in-tank fuel pump. The car runs fine but seems underpowerd. My question is. Do I need to change the whole unit or just the pump attached.? Thank you. |

If the rest is OK, just the pump. But look very carefully at the condition of the steel pipes. They are very prone to rust, and develop pin-holes initially which let air get sucked in or cause small leaks. In my experience you will be lucky to get the rubber pipes off them without mangling.
Getting the unit out is an art. Clean away all dirt and rust, and hoover all the surrounding area. Soak the ring in WD40, and then lever or chisel it carefully, or even use the proper tool! As soon as the ring has moved a bit, chip away at more rust and hoover again. Be very careful not to put any pressure on the pipes. Good luck Cliff Pope |

I second every word of Cliff's post, and particularly the above. I believe The Proper Tool is a brass chisel, as you don't want any sparks in this area.

RE: Volvo 240 GL (B200E) 1989 fuel pump
Thank you for the advice it all sounds straight forward.
I had a look at the pipes and seal, no rust or dirt at all so I think I may be in luck. I found some alternative pumps at a cheaper price, are they as good as the original Bosh? Thanks again. |

Another thing I was thinking about was which fuel to use.
Do I use unleaded high octane or Unleaded with additive? Thanks. |

You may not even need a new pump. The pump is connected to the pick-up by a short length of flexible hose which can leak, allowing the pump to suck air instead of fuel. Failure of the in-tank pump (or associated leaks) will have less effect on fuel delivery and thus performance when the tank is above half full, are your syptoms still evident regardless of tank fuel level? RE: Volvo 240 GL (B200E) 1989 fuel pump
I am a bit confused about the octane raiting table as a the b200e engine up to 1989 appears twice with 2 different actions to take. My 1989 model with a 1988 manufactured engine is only for use with 4* (98 octane)fuel however further down the chart is states my model can be used with 95 octane so if you have got a volvo handbook check first

RE: Volvo 240 GL (B200E) 1989 fuel pump
I filled the tank and went for a drive, the power was up but the buzzing sound was still there.
Is that because the accumulator is not getting enough pressure and the relay wont switch off , or the fact the pump has dropped from the assembly and its touching the tank bottom.? As for the octane I checked the handbook and I need high octane as do all the injected b200s of that age.(I think) Thanks. |

BTDT.... another possibility (my problem) is that the pump's fine, but the lead through insulator in the plate is open circuit. There WAS an unused blanked off pipe in my plate.... much cheaper than the new pump I'd already bought!
