I use the connected phone to allow TuneIn radio then select Radio Paradise from California. Try it. The selection is perfect with no adverts to ruin the output.

Is it worth ripping to FLAC just for the car? FLAC files do sound slightly better in the car but, no, I wouldn't bother.

My USB music costs me nothing, years of vinyl and CD's ripped to it. Is there a subscription price to use Spotify, is it another drip, drip payment to drain away money.

Have all my music on an iPod which works fine - seem to remember reading somewhere that the Spotify stream needs you to have and log into a Spotify Premium service so that's the drip drip tenner a month! Plus of course you need to have the car connected by installing the sim in the boot

Yes yes, drip drip, but you are going to have to buy new music at some point, otherwise you will always be living in the past, and thus proving my point that Spotify is the future.
It only costs me a fiver a month, because I use one of my daughters student reduction benefits, but even if it was a tenner, I can afford it and I would pay that to hav access, not just to my previous music collection, but my future one as well.

No Spotify ia 'A' not 'THE' future! Yes ipod will degrade in usefulness over time but I'm still of the mind that the only way to ensure artists get their royalties is by buying physical products, be they CDs or vinyl. Reading an interview with David Crosby in The Times over the weekend where he said '8 Miles High' had been streamed 228,086 times in Q2 2016 and Roger McGinn received the princely royalty of $9.15 - no idea which streaming service(s) that was but that can't be right! Plus as a 6 Music fanatic that provides pretty much all of the new content I need

I think by 'the future' he was referring to streaming services. CD and physical music is a dying format. I own a huge back catalog of stuff from when you needed to own it, but I'd rather pay for streaming so I can choose what I want from an album rather than buying it for 1 or 2 tracks in a lot of cases. Some albums have 1 great track and a load of crap, I'm not going to pay for that! I do not believe the article stating he only got $9.15 for 228,086 streams, even if he got the lower of the normal $0.006 - $0.0084 that still equates to over $1700. Ok, that's not a huge amount, and that can still be split amongst several parties, but the point is STREAMING is the future, artists need to keep pushing for more as they are doing but also need to understand that their market is changing, for good!

I was referring to streaming rather than Spotify specifically.

Steaming and radio has its place to hear new bands and singers, a gateway to options if your like, but if you do not listen to all that your favourite bands or singers have to offer then you are missing a lot and if you see them live you may be in for a surprise. If all you listen to is radio and streaming services then the majority of what you listen to is decided by a few mainstream executives that think what it is good and what makes them money, not what you may consider to be good and really want to hear.
