Defrosting Car Windscreen/Windows - What do you do?

I use an insulated wind screen cover and plastic carrier bags on the mirrors remove cover and bags and drive off. no water no scraper no chemicals simples.

I turn on my heated screen and get my ice scraper on the side Windows... Job done

+1 for insulated windscreen covers. One on each car, quick shake and pop it in the boot. No hassle and works perfectly every time, drive straight off with no waiting.

I usually use a basic scraper

That pic is from a website where they are expensive but they often end up cheap in places like Tesco at the end of winter, I think I paid 50p each last time I bought several. I take the stupid bit of foam out but that leaves the hard edge for heavy ice and the squeegee for light frosting.
Sometimes the screen ices up due to being wet before it freezes which leaves a very hard coat of solid ice rather than crystalline frost, that seems impervious to anything but heat so I do use warm water to get that moving. I never use the various spray deicers as I find if it's hard enough to need it then it's cold enough to freeze the deicer into a nasty chemical slush which is twice as difficult to remove.

With engine running, heaters on full, i use a large 2l bottle of hot tap water, i dont use it from the kettle, thats a tad too hot for ice cold glass but never had a problem with it from the tap. I pour it over the top of the screen with the wipers on (once freed if needed), standing at arms length, theres a knack to not getting soaked by the wipers but pouring over the top section, the water flows down screen, covers more for less

I also do all the windows and as soon as thery are clear/free, i wind them down to clean off excess water to prevent refreezing, also do the lights too, used to do the locks also but dont need to that that nowadays

Some will say that hot water will crack the screen, suffice to say, ive been doing it this way for the last 25 years and either been very lucky, or tap heat is fine.
I dont recommend if you already have a crack, bullseye or other large chip, tiny
chips have been ok though....
