First of all I haven't a clue about oil-burners and don't own the car I'm refering to, which is a 2002 V70 D5 with 125,000 miles and FSH.....

The car is for sale through ebay as a non-runner due to suspected fuel pump failure. I desperately need to change to a V70 from S60 due to child and related clobber, and thought this may be a good route to venture down to offset the extra cost of a V70.

My simple question, as I'm likely to be buying blind (it's on ebay), is is this a reasonably likely supposition? or are there any other major issues to cause this engine to not run (assume all timed correctly)?

i would ask the following.
how much fuel is in the tank.
has it been run dry.
2002 if no injectors has been changed that was a bad year for injector issues so they could be original, if they are then it could be a injector fault.if there is injector issues the car will not start
its had the main done ie the clutch and slave hopefully the core plug would have been done at the same time if not a costly job for a £2 part.
hope that helps.

Going up to look at this tomorrow/Thursday evening.

Just got a couple of questions (diesel specific) -

would I expect the fuel pump to prime for a few seconds with the ignition on?
If pump runs, that would point to leaky injector issues I assume (or lack of fuel - fuel gauge on ad shows it as 1 bar above the red).
Is there a way to get an engine to run with a faulty injector (even in limp mode)? Are the injectors operated electronically or mechanically?

Cheers

Viewed the car - Vida reports the engine error to be: ECM2505: Fuel pressure too low

According to the owner, whilst driving the car dropped into limp mode, accompanied by the engine service required message, then cut out.

Sound like a fuel pump - could anything else cause this fault?

Couldn't hear the pump prime, but was on roadside so can't be sure.

In my experience the car will start/run fine with the in tank pump dead.

It could be the high pressure pump, it could even just be the fuel filter.....

Well I bought it, getting it delivered tomorrow afternoon. Thought about going up with a gallon of diesel to see if it's due to in tank pump failing and low fuel level, but thought this may be cheeky in front of the seller.

I look forward to having a play with it and getting it going.

Soon for sale S60 bi-fuel ........

This looks like a great little project, keep the thread updated. The car seems to have been well looked after too, plenty of stamps, major work carried out and decent matching tyres as opposed to the usual cheapo mismatched crap.

Good luck with it and hope it turns out to be an easy fix.
