Default Deposit down on a S60 T5 SE

Im in the process of buying a 2001 T5 SE.

I looked the car over, well maintanined, high mileage, but dealers and even volvo specialist are telling me volvos will run forever if well maintained.

Q: Is there anyone who has modified thier car in any way, ECU, Wheels, Exhaust ect...?
Q: Can you reccomend a VERY GOOD specialist in / around Essex, i work in hoddesdon, and live in Maldon, near chelsmford, Essex.
Q: Any qurkiness lurking aroud the corner..?
If theres anyhting else you can think of, please let meknow.

Kind Regards,
Mark

I can't answer any of your questions (except maybe 3) but I would recommend you look out for a 2002 model if you can, even if only to compare. 2001 was the first year if I remember and there were a few "bugs" shall we say. Most of these should have been sorted but there were some fairly major spec changes for the 2002 model year. If I recall correctly, the following were the two biggest ones
1 DSTC Dynamic Stability and Traction Control became standard on the 2002 models.
2 The throttle module was changed on the 2002, giving them a much better (sharper) throttle response
(Oh and they deleted the T5 S specification for 2002 as well). This was the info I got (off this and other Volvo websites) when I was looking to buy new and which convinced me to wait for the 2002 models. Haven't regretted it since! Car is still under it's 3 year warranty so I've not looked at modifications yet.

Hi, no STC is the "basic" traction control system. DSTC may only have been an option for the 2001 year but was standard on the 2002 T5's. The button would be labelled DSTC if it had it. Someone more technical can probably explain it better but the Dynamic STC can cut power and apply brakes on different wheels to help to prevent things like spins, it's got various extra yaw sensors and accelerometers to work out when it needs to intervene. I believe the STC can only cut the power and it doesn't have the extra sensors. In a straight line I guess there's not much difference, it's what the DSTC can do in an emergency that makes it worth it (IMHO).
