Default V50 noise like a flat spot on tyre

Hi,

I have an '05 Volvo V50 1.8 and it is now making a strange noise. It is not a constant noise, it is a noise that happens regularly and consistantly according to speed. The faster you go the more frequently you hear it. Like the harder you workout the more frequently you hear your heart beat. At first I thought it could be a badly flat spotted tyre but there isn't really a vibration to go with the noise. Now I feel like it's more under the gearbox, something central to the car.

Any ideas or questions for me that would help diagnose this?

I had a similar issue with my C30 when I first picked it up. Turned out to be the tyre, I had never heard of such a tyre sounding like a wheel bearing. Tyre swapped, issue solved.

Might be worth swapping the tyres or even putting your spare wheel on, to rule it out?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, will have to give that a go. It's hard to describe the sound but it's definitely a sound triggered once every rotation of something, whether that's the tyre, wheel, front axle etc...maybe I could describe it as a mild and muffled kick drum.

Seen it, done it, been there. I would also go for new tires especially if the car had been sitting for a few months.

I once picked up a new second hand car with a pat-pat-pat noise from one of the tyres. Turns out it had been sat with a flat tyre beforehand and the car's weight had damaged the carcass of the tyre.

New tyre on and the problem vanished.
