memory loss, bit of help please
I know it was mentioned many times before, full lists were made, but for the life of me I can't find it.
Out if XC70 range, which motors/years fall into "ULEZ compliant"? I know all petrols will do, but most of diesels won't. So.. Anyone remembers? Pretty please?

Em..
No. Long story short: CAT in my current V70 failed. Wife lost patience and started demanding new(er) car. I'm still fixing the one I've got, but I need to start searching, planning, thinking how to finance, its successor. My personal preference would be 3.2 petrol, but on pararell I'd like to check availability of ULEZ compliant diesels. But I don't know which ones comply. For sure not D5 of "old" (163bhp, 185bhp), but I'm quite sure there was some D5 (twin turbo?), that did meet E6 emission. But which one was it? And is it the only one? For record: I can't imagine myself in a "tower" car. Xc90/60/40- just not for me. V70- plausible, the only fault I can see is "climbing down" into the seat. Thus XC70- not too tall, not too low.

Ahh...
OK. Found it. D4(181bhp) And D5(220bhp) Now.. D5 is a Volvo unit, but that D4, I have suspicion, may be Ford..

D4(2.0 Ltd/163bhp) is Ford. Or so it seems.
D4(2.4, 5-pot, 181bhp) seems to be Volvo. But then what is a VEA D4 D4204T5 (181bhp out of 2ltrs)? Aand.. For pretty much same price (around £11k)I could have 3.2 petrol, with not too great mpg, not too low "road tax", and unknown insurance costs.. And D4(181) with better mpg, possibly lower excise duty, still unknown insurance costs, fear of dpf problems, and so on.. True that the 3.2 petrol would be from 2008 and D4 from 2014, but which one would make more sense in London, with only occasional trip out? I guess blind luck will decide. Whichever one I'll be able to get when I sort out financing- that's the one that will be..

There was no ford badged as a D4. Its a Volvo 5 cylinder. The only ford 2.0 was 136bhp 4 cylinder that was fitted into a v70 mk3 badged 2.0d but not an xc70.

The D4 2.0 4-cylinder 181 bhp engine is Volvo and I have it in my 2014 V70 D4 SE Lux Geartronic.
Even though it's a 4-cylinder engine, Volvo have gone to a lot (and I mean a lot) of trouble to make the power delivery extremely smooth. Occasionally I can hear its 4-cylinder-ness but mostly it's just a quiet, smooth and powerful lump under the bonnet that accelerates extremely well and pulls like a train. Around 3 years ago, I nearly bought a used 2008 D5 geartronic. When I compare my current D4 to that D5, I find that the D4 is actually faster. Plus it's quieter and has a more even power delivery. All in all, it's a winner. And it only costs £30 a year for Vehicle Excise Duty. If you can buy a FWD XC70 then you'll get most of the performance and economy benefits of a V70 along with the ease of access of the XC70. I also agree with your choice of body style. Even though the original XC90 and XC60 Volvo SUVs look big, the more traditional V70 / XC70 has more room for the driver and (IMO) offers a better driving position. For that reason, my son recently bought a 2011 FWD XC70 D3 (5-cylinder, 161 bhp) and he loves it. The infotainment tech in later V70s and XC70s is better, however, with the faired in satnav and better developed phone tech, voice control etc. Also, the SUVs are more expensive to buy and run, so why bother? As an aside, I do wonder whether or not the pendulum will eventually swing away from SUVs. From a green perspective they're a retrograde step compared with the good old saloon / estate / hatchback. And that's before we consider access for less mobile people. |

Yup..
What draws me to this one is VEA. I think its the only VEA engine in XC70 series. And.. Am I right on this: Manual transmission is on £30 per year VED But automatic is on £125? Also, any known issues with dpf? Does it use "urine" (ad-blue or whatever) for emission control?

This is certainly the case for the V70. There isn't an automatic MY 2014 XC70 for sale right now, however, so I can't say for certain that the same applies to the XC70. An extra £95 each year would annoy me slightly, but not enough to change my purchasing decision, however. My 2014 V70 doesn't use AdBlue but I've read somewhere that it's tuned to use a specific fuel. Having said that, I use any diesel apart from supermarket fuel and don't get any issues. I've also not encountered any DPF issues as yet, but it does get the benefit of some long runs. (If I was only doing short journeys then I'd buy a petrol vehicle instead since it would probably work out cheaper to buy and run.) |

But then- £11k+ for 10-12 years old car? There are of course T6 3.0, but I heard of issues with gearbox: simply put, the engine is too strong for gearbox/gearbox too weak for the engine. Maybe that's why T6s are sooo much cheaper Shame that Volvo abandoned that 3.2 in 2010- I'd like to have that in a bit younger version, if I could. Yes, I became addicted to automatics, yet I look forward to being able to override the gear changes (geartronic). And yes- I do quite a bit of "shorter" trips. That "shorter" needs some defining, though.. 7-10 miles each way, but timewise it may take anything from 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on time of the day. And then once ir twice per year a trip to "the other side", from time to time a job outside of capitol (I'll spend next few months doing around 100 miles daily, for example) Thus my current thinking would be: Either that old 3.2 with its vices (like £530 p/a VED) Or newer, much newer, D4.. With vices pretty much still unknown to me. Thanks for all the info, by the way. I
