For the avoidance of doubt.... the proper question should not be D4 or D5 it is do you need AWD ?
If not the D4 fwd VEA is perfectly fine and the only way to get an Mk 1 XC60 with the 8 speed auto.... (The D5 AWD is brilliant tho...)

I've had my D4 FWD manual since mid 2015, when it was already 6 months old. It usually travels fairly lightly loaded and is more than adequate for normal driving and quick overtaking if necessary. Unless towing or going off road regularly there is no need for AWD - I have never had front wheel slip, unlike some previous cars. The D4 completes long motorway journeys in very relaxed style.
Initially I had problems with very occasional engine management warnings and with the stop-start functioning only very infrequently, although neither of these affected the performance or reliability of the car. Eventually the dealer replaced the EGR (for free, although the warranty had expired) and a couple of sensors. Since then I have had no further fault warnings and the stop-start has functioned correctly. My lifetime average fuel consumption is 45 mpg but on a longer run I can get 50-52 mpg. Also worth noting that the D4 FWD manual fell into the short lived £30 car tax bracket. So far as I am aware this was the only version of the XC60 to do so - it's a big car for such low tax. |

Thanks for all of the replies peeps
Probably erring towards a 2.4 D5 AWD now but still undecided on manual or Geartronic. I've seen some XC60s that have a Dynaudio stereo system in them. Do they all come with this or is this part of an optional pack? If the latter, is the standard stereo any good? Do all stereos in the XC60 have USB and AUX inputs in the centre console or is that only on the upgraded cars? J |

The Dynaudio speaker package was an option, but the standard system is excellent. I think all facelift XC60 have USB and some have a hard drive but not sure about AUX. (My MY 17 did not and neither does my V40) but will have Bluetooth streaming.

Thanks for the responses guys, very helpful
One other thing I've noticed is that 2.4 D5 AWD spec cars from MY2016 onwards seem to have much better fuel economy and lower emissions than the same spec facelifted 2014/2015 cars... Why is this? Did Volvo tweak the 2.4 engine further or change injectors etc? I'm assuming its the same 6-speed Geartronic 'box too? J |

1st one was a 2013 Car with the 215 bhp (IIRC) engine but with analogue instruments & the LED light next to the Grill. It had a USB in the console, No HDD, No DAB & No Nav. & the standard High Performance sound system. Wasn't a bad system but a bit of a step down from the Premium Sound I had in the previous S60. Car I have now is a 2015 car with the facelift, so digital instruments, Nav, HDD, DAB etc. It also has the Harmon Kardon Premium sound system which is in the words of my 14 year old son 'Wicked' I'd just say it's excellent. This car also has the Driver support pack so - Active High Beam lights, Blind Spot Information, Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise etc.... Oh I also had it Polestar Optimised when I bought it. I can safely say my 1st XC60 is the 2nd best Car I've ever owned (even better than the C70 T5 GT), however the 2nd XC60 is easily the best car I've ever had. My average fuel consumption is currently showing as 39.7 mpg since I reset it (must be 10,000+ miles ago) as reported by the On-Call function, I know it may not be 100% accurate but If I was worried that much about fuel consumption I'd have a 1l fiesta or something like. I bought the car 18 month ago on 36,000 miles, It's now on 65,000 & it's not skipped a beat or needed any work over & above dealer servicing that I managed to get as part of the deal.

I so miss my C70 T5 GT (Manual) and I've had two. Bought a W-reg one, kept it two summers, sold it, regretted it, bought another one 2 years later (53 plate facelift), kept it two summers, sold it, etc...... "I'm just going to overtake this slow car dear.... Whoops I'm doing 120 mph...."

https://www.media.volvocars.com/uk/e...-out-programme I'm in the same boat as you. Really like the mk2 XC60 but don't want to spend that much so looking at a 2015/16 D5 AWD instead. |

I've just got myself into a 2015 XC60 D5 AWD Geartronic... so I've owned recently that car and a 2016 XC60 D4 2WD Manual (4 pot VEA engine).
In all other respects the cars were/are identical SE LUX models with Winter Pack. Points to note... - AWD Geartronic car is 15% more thirsty - D4 is very slightly more refined under acceleration (but D5 still makes a nice noise) - D4 does suffer torque steer when worked hard or on uneven surfaces (especially on factory hard tyres). Not an issue at all on AWD. - AWD car better residuals (but more to buy) - Performance between 190 FWD and 215 AWD - fairly close. So unless you live in the sticks, go off road or tow heavy loads, the FWD cars do make good sense. I do all of the above so really happy with the D5 AWD. The D4 I had from new and it had a new clutch slave cylinder under warranty at 48k, no other issues. The chap I passed it on to still has it and it's got 96k on it now with no further issues whatsoever. That was a company lease car and he's planning to buy it in March when the lease ends.
