Default Starts but there is very little power

Hi

We have a V50 Sport Diesel 2007 reg, it starts ok but there is limited power so you cant pull away unless you put the pedal to the floor to get enough revs. Recently had a new EGR value which had broken, at same time of it occurring last time, when it wouldnt run at all after several tries. AA man had to by pass it then it worked ok. So we assumed that was the problem, but obviously not. Loads of black smoke comes out on the second attempt - when it finally works properly. Any ideas please?
