Default More wet passenger footwell issues...

Morning All,

After a heavy overnight rain week before last I found that I had a several inches deep puddle in the passenger footwell and, after reading many posts on the forums, confirmed I had the issue with the windscreen having no seal along the top edge and, when the rain came on again I could see the water dripping from around the passenger visor and the front pillar fabric was wet which seemed to pinpoint the source. (I did check in with the local dealer out of interest as to possible remedies to which they just advised they could only refer me to a local third party who may undertake resealing or to phone my insurance and claim for a new windscreen!). Anyway, after the initial downpour I had sealed along the top of the windscreen with gaffer tape and had newspapers in the footwell under the mat and on the passenger seat which had a bit of splash marking on from the first soaking.

My query is that when I went out again this morning (after another heavy downpour) the rubber mat appears dry (good) and the papers on the passenger seat are dry (good) but the newspaper I had under the rubber mat are soaking still (surprising). If the water is no longer dripping from above due to the professional gaffer tape interim repair (!), is there any way the footwell carpet could still be ending up soaking even if the rubber mat above is dry? e.g. another route the water could taking that I perhaps can't see?

Any thoughts most appreciated!!

Sandy

My car had the same problem and I found the carpet needs to be rolled back and the water squeezed out of the sponge backing, this holds a good deal of water. If you keep the carpet rolled back and the blower on footwell setting it will help speed up drying and when it rains again you can shine a torch to see where the water is dripping. If you approach Volvo UK they should help you out but they will direct you to your dealer. I was concerned not only about the water damage but also the safety aspect. Volvo said there was no recall but my local dealer was unable to help, so I was left to sort it out myself. This poorly bonded screen issue goes back many years and there is plenty of comments on this issue on the internet.

Hi pull up carpet and lay a few old newspapers down and leave a day or so. Keep replacing papers until dry , this takes a few days . Its amazing how much water will soak into the foam underlay . If you leave the water there it will soon start to smell and condensation can mess up electronics under passenger seat. also leave window open when weather permits . Its the only way I could dry out my V70 when the sun roof drain blocked some years ago.
Good luck

Many thanks both : looks like it's carpet up time! Is there any special knack required to pull up that carpet and be able to replace it neatly or should it come up fairy easily? I had wondered if any electrics lingered under there given how wet it seems.

My back seat passengers are also saying that they can hear water sloshing around/tricking in the pillar between the front and back doors when we are setting off or stopping. I can't hear it from the front unfortunately so not sure exactly how it manifests. Could that be connected also to the windscreen leaking or would that location suggest something else also amiss? (No sunroof in this one btw).

Cheers,

Sandy

Agreed. When we had footwell flooding problems with daughter’s V50 due to blocked sunroof drain it took several changes of newspapers over several days before the underlay etc. was dry. Once had water ingress problems with my Marina and had the underlay and carpet in the boiler room at work for several days before it was properly dry.

No special knack just remove the footplate cover on the door sill etc and pull up carpet . The water in the "B" post seems unusual , never heard of that before . Known collection points are Wet foot wells , water sloshing in Bulkhead usually heard when turning and water leaking through the Tail gate hinges .Water in foot-wells are usually caused by either a leaking screen or blocked sunroof drain. Bulkhead is usually caused by leaking screen and the tailgate leak is usually caused by a build up of dirt on the rubber seals around the hinge opening. The water from the rear hinges can find it way into the spare wheel well and slosh around , worth checking.

I had the exact same thing; wet passenger footwell (front and rear) and sloshing sound from around the (passenger) B-pillar. It’s the windscreen; I had mine replaced (on insurance as it was cracked), dried carpets etc. and it’s been fine since - dry, and no sloshing sound. I assume the water just collects in the headlining and eventually runs down into the B-pillar, then the rear footwell?

Took me a good few weeks to dry everything out, using newspapers and even towels to soak the water, then changing them for new ones every day. Must have been a LOT of water sloshing around in the headlining, but no residual issues once fixed and dried out...

Check your CEM behind the glove box in case it is wet too. It's the box of electronics with the integral fuse box. A replacement one of those and programming is serious dosh. Also any loom connectors that are under or around the wet carpet area as they can get corroded joints and cause issues. Screens can be removed and rebonded as we did it with our XC60.

In short get the water out asap!
